Miss Hong Kong 1996

Okay, I didn’t watch ’97 BUT I seriously have a feeling that ’96 was the last year worth watching regarding beauty and entertainment. I know that ’98 got so many stars and all too, but it seemed that was the only thing that saved the ceremony.
Interesting and funny opening since Eric and Natalis were posing as James Bond wannabes! LOL! Actually, Eric was 097 and Natalis was some similar agent. The contestants were supposed to introduce themselves by the star/artist that others said they look like. Lee San San was so funny, saying that she is like Eric ’cause of her performance: SUPER.
Though they used Eric and Natalis a lot as the entertainers but those two were too funny. They seemed to be so natural with their stabs at one another. It was still witty back then versus now, getting WAY overboard.
I love this approach though I know it’s another attempt for TVB to recruit talents. They were being separated into groups to either act, sing, dance, host, etc. Then they were being scored and 4 would be eliminated, lol. Man, during the singing thing, I finally feel tortured and feel everyone was really brave since only #2 and #19 could sing without making me shiver, LOL.Wow! The hosting thing was really good! Regardless, I must say they were really fast. They were so creative!
Ooohhh…break time aka more showing off with their beauty outfits, lol. (While they await the results of course.) Following the evening gown was the swimsuits, lol. Then of course the elimination.
Questioning time! How fun, eh? Most of them were very creative, even if they did not know the real answer. Not disappointing at all. It was kind of sad that someone didn’t know about Bruce Lee. Even if she was from overseas, she should’ve heard about it or know some basic stuffs. Natalis’ secret! LOL! He said he didn’t know it but she know? So funny.
Man…the hosts are killing me! They’re so random and yet it was just to stall for time so the scoring could be locked in. They were bringing up all the past Miss Hong Kongs with the stories. Man, they were crossing out practically everyone! LOL! In fact, they crossed out everyone. So funny! Dripping of sarcasm, aren’t they? Then they were moving into ‘praising themselves’? LOL!
Adam Cheng singing! Yay! Man, miss the guy’s songs.
So after the long rant, we get to see the results (with the contestants wearing colorful long traditional dresses). Oh, almost forgot that they need to announce the talented Miss Hong Kong, which of course was collected by Lee San San. Talented all right. (Too bad she didn’t get too many chances to show off her skills later on. Perhaps it was the price of winning the prize.) Then it was followed by Miss Photogenic, which was also won by Lee San San.
Results (as announced): #16, #7, #2, #16, #13, #5, #1, #6, #15, #9, #19, #17 (Wait, I heard wrong? How come there are two 16? Hmmm…oh well…)
Moving on to the second part, lol.
Nice opening. Grand… They managed to get the band from the Hong Kong Royal Police to help with the opening. It was grand all right. Faye Wong was next up.
The contestants were brought out and they had to say what roles they would like to take on in the future. (*CUE*: ANOTHER TVB ATTEMPT TO RECRUIT TALENTS) It was still great to see and hear what the contestants had to say. Some of them were really fake, BUT the ones who said they wanted to portray obnoxious, mean, evil roles were the more honest ones, lol.
Okay, the next part was where they introduce all four seasons and we were told that the contestants would dressed accordingly. Of course there would be singers to lead them along. More rants from Eric and Natalis but I don’t mind. They’re probably stalling for time so the contestants could change into their spring outfits. Hacken Lee and his classic hits! Awww…who could forget “Never Change In A Lifetime”, right? (My ultimate favorite of Hacken.) What’s the next season? Summer of course! LOL! Who’s up? Harlem Yu! (I never realize it was him, okay? I wasn’t paying attention to TW entertainment back then.)
Questioning – finally, lol. They were divided into groups of 3 for the questionings. Creativity, fast thinking, and witty replies. Well, at least they get to show their talents – IF they had any. (Mean, I know, but it’s pretty obvious who is intelligent and who is not.) #2 was really funny, lol. Well, at least she thought of a story. OKAY, that was mean! Still making fun of Deric Wan and the whole ‘debt collecting’ thing. Lee San San was witty! LOL! Natalis kept mentioning Cecilia! (LOL) #19 wasn’t bad either. I sort of phased out of some others. LOL! NO idea. I was laughing too hard when Eric kept making fun of them to care.
Autumn! Finally! My favorite season after Spring. BUT then it was too funny seeing that Eric and Natalis were shut out after they were performing for a bit, LOL. Julian Cheung (ChiLam IF you guys rather go by that name) part after that. The real performance. Since they were just teasing us with Eric and Natalis before. I’m not familiar with his songs so I won’t say much. But must complain about the dresses. The backdrop looked nice, but must they make them wear black? Or was that dark green? Oh well…
BUT I like winter theme though! It was too funny! Eric and Natalis still trying to hog the camera! It was so funny when they were introduced. Funny descriptions, lol. They were so sarcastic yet witty! Too bad they were sabotaged by Gallen and Gordon! Man, I love that song! (They were singing that one cool Jacky Cheung song.) Eric and Natalis were still trying to sabotage Gallen and Gordon! LOL! Eric was saying how Gallen and Gordon were trying to copy Jacky, lol. What a comeback! Too bad they were cut short by Sunny’s appearance. Yup, re-make of Shanghai Bund year so they had to promote it. (Typical TVB…) But it was sooo funny. (I think after Sunny’s done with all those lines, he need a plastic bag! Honestly, they were so mushy! LOL! Poor Sunny!) Lee San San’s comment – so funny! The only one worth listening to really.
Aww…the four seasons ended already. BUT at least Edmond Leung and Andy Hui are worth looking forward to. Yay! They’re so funny. And it’s so cool seeing them outside (aka off stage). It’s always enjoyable to see beautiful scenery. Andy’s the honest one while Edmond’s the mischievous one, lol. Still cute. They’re cracking me up big time. They rather be stuck on earth with the beauties than return to their place and deal with Eric and Natalis? Hilarious! Of course like any other year, the performance was taken onstage again.
Like usual, time to announce Miss Congeniality and then top 5. Eric was commenting on how they had to learn the art of changing clothes as well, lol. True, since they were speedy all right.
Miss Congeniality was #2. (They called it ‘Miss International Goodwill’.) Definitely a good choice since Fiona was really sweet looking and her smile said it all. Really friendly.
Top 5: #18, #1, #19, #13, #2
This is the part where they had to answer questions from the judges. (This sort of reminds me of how the Western beauty pageants are designed, especially the last part with selecting the judges to get questions.)
#1 got Mr. Wong, #13 got Adam (LOL). Eric was commenting how Lee San San already passed without answering, LOL. (At least passing the door.)  Adam was asking about the strongest point of Hong Kong–to which Lee San San answered with economy. #19 got Anita, lol. Tough question since it was regarding food. #18 wasn’t bad.
Last part aka the skit they did while the final scoring was done. Leon, Carina, Alex, and others. Aww…too bad it wasn’t Tony. (I’m too obsessed, lol.) Leon was the painter, Carina was the main actress, and Alex was portraying the male lead (aka the prince). Kind of mushy so it was sore of a snore for me. But still glamorous in its own way.
Okay, finally the hectic yet excited moment of the night! They had to stand on this one step and answered why they chose that spot–of course it was labeled as 1- 3. #1 was so  confident, LOL. #2 guessed she was 3rd, that was cool! She was right! LOL! #13 guessed she was first? Good guess! Confidence but not arrogant (unlike #1 who was in La-La Land, lol). #18 wants to be taller than her father? Cute! LOL! #19 guessed 2nd for her. Not too arrogant, nice. 2nd runner up => #2. 1st runner up was of course #18. Those two should’ve been swapped. But still all right. NOT too bad. The winner was of course #13! Yay! Lee San San was sooo tall. Anyway, it was so funny how Eric was teasing #1 by saying that the winner was #1, LOL! Natalis was saying how Eric got to be kidding, LOL. But Eric was saying it was 1 + 3 = 13. OKAY….not sure how that works mathematically but funny.
Great results. At least I didn’t feel robbed this year. The last good year.

Miss Hong Kong 1999

So, what about 1999? Cool opening. This year, the girls got to sing more than the previous years. (Again, probably cutting back on inviting the famous guests. Possibly a way to recruit new singers.) Still, in a way, it helped to see that they were so united in various parts.
New way to start the show. Letting them walk around and grade their different features and/or body parts.
Finalists for the nice/beautiful legs: #5, #7, #17, #15; Winner: #15
Beautiful Skin: #4, The Most Fit: #14
Finally questioning part…*sigh*I must admit that though they were not as pretty as expected, but they were more intelligent and/or more fluent than last year’s. They seemed to understand and interact better. At least for most of them, comparing to last year. #9 was really good! Man, she guessed right! Sonija’s answer! Funny yet her explanation made sense. I don’t even know why Myolie even got in! She couldn’t get past Eric or Chin Ka Lok in the first round. (Okay, so she got the fitness prize, but so what?)
The next part was testing how well the contestants handled rumors. Interesting since it would bring forth how well mannered they are. Not to mention to see how they would react. (Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that it was a chance to wear their evening gowns. Kind of nice.)
Finally something to see. Or at least in the entertainment department. They have to go find 4 key elements to help save the earth, lol. The first one is the key of intelligence. Daniel Chan led the first group. The second one is the stone of true love and the group was led by Edmond Leung. The third group was led by Eason Chan and they had to find the (?) of leisure. (Sorry, too fast, wasn’t really paying attention) The fourth guy was Ronald Cheng and they had to find the sword of bravery.
Miss Photogenic? LOL! Funny how the hosts were explaining how it works, lol. Louis kept calling Sonija his fiancee, lol. So cute!
Interesting way to know the result. Probably another way to livening up things.
Anyway, the opening of the second part, more of the contestants singing the songs themselves instead of having some famous guest do it. Natalis joined the other hosts. Again, always good to see Eric and Natalis together as a team. (They’re more on par with each other than the others. Not that the others aren’t good but Eric and Natalis are on the same level, so their jokes toward each other aren’t as awkward though the others tried.) What they lack in popular singers and/or popular music, they made up for the different performances of the variety of musicals. Interesting to see and learn more regarding the cultural aspects. (Clever move by TVB. I know it’s a TVB move to cut back on inviting famous singers BUT I actually like the idea of presenting different parts of cultures into this one.) Michael Tse came into the scene around the time they were doing some stunts, LOL! He participated in some fight scenes. (But of course there was also some dancing as well.) Different stunts were done and the tricks were quite entertaining. (Probably a lot of hard-work. Man, quite nerve-wrecking during some scenes, especially the one they were carrying the kid and raising him to the second level while doing jump ropes.)
Fun questioning part since if the contestant was wrong, she would be lowered one step. #2 only got one right? LOL! #4 has none right? Honestly? OKAY… #5 got 4 right out of 5. Wow! Still hope. #9 got 4 right out of 5. Hmmm… #11 got 4 out of 5 as well. Sonjia? 3 out of 5. Not bad. Myolie? 4 out of 5? Really? OKAY… #17 got 3 out of 5. #18 got 2 right. #19 got only 1 right. It was getting funnier. #20 got 3 right.
More questions but this time they are asking contestants to vote for one another. #11 is seriously stuck up. #2 was clever, LOL! Who was fake or who was playing on words? LOL! Some of them are actually very funny.
They actually do more questions this year – or so it seems. It gives them more chances to prove themselves – or make a fool of themselves. YET it puzzles me even more and more why Myolie even got in. She wasn’t as impressive as the rest of them. Sure, some of them were not that great. But it wasn’t like she surpassed the others. #20 was really funny with her answer regarding who she wanted to get rid of. (#12 so they wouldn’t have to compete, LOL.) At last she wasn’t fake about it.
After announcing to us that #4 won the Miss Healthy prize (?), they were back with showing us how the contestants were choosing their own outfits, etc.
Okay, bikinis. Recycled ones. Well, ’cause they were trying to reminisce past Miss Hong Kongs so they were doing the theme of letting the contestants wear past ones. PHEW! Darn! Sonija almost took a fall. Lucky she was strong or managed to regain herself in time. Another contestant almost fall too. I swear there was something with the steps.
Sonija got the Miss Congeniality? Lucky she got it. (For some reason, I remember it was Myolie. Lucky I remember wrong.)
Okay, last skit before they moved on to top 5. Aaron Kwok and Kelly Chen. Of course can’t forget William So and Michael Tse either. (I forgot Cecilia Cheung was in the story too.)
Singing the top 5? LOL! Well, sort of since they were trying to see who was in or out. Trying to crank the hype up again. Eric doesn’t want to be host anymore ’cause his niece didn’t make it? LOL! Seriously, some of the other ones got better answers than Myolie. Oh well, the damage is already done.
Best smile? WHAT?! Alan Tam picked Myolie? Seriously? Marsha’s smile is the best among all since she really lightens up the whole atmosphere with her smile. Sally got better taste! LOL! AND Mr. Kwok was really cool. #4 and #12 definitely won in that area.
Regardless of all my criticism, I actually like the idea of having them sing the song ‘Peng You’. Kind of touching. (Even if it was leaning on the side of fakeness, lol. Sorry, had to squeeze that in.) The flashbacks were kind of heart-warming.Though I was wondering if they were scoring points with Alan Tam, LOL! At least I think someone got through already.
Before they announced the results, Sonija snatched another prize. (YAY! Well, let me just say that anyone snatching a prize is better than Myolie.) OF course Myolie got third place while Marsha Yuan got 2nd (PHEW). Let’s just be glad Myolie didn’t get the prize. BUT if I had to pick, I rather let #7 be third and it would be perfect. At least for that year.
