How was it for me? I felt like I wasted the last fifteen weeks for nothing. I’m not saying that it’s bad. But I’m saying that there are several factors that have ruined it. The ending is always the most important part to convince us so I think it has to be really, really strong. It’s hard to do and it can’t all be perfect to everyone’s satisfaction, but it has to at least make sense. In some areas, it did make sense. But in others, I just felt so infuriated that it was like all was wasted.
First off, they have a great team with the special team. Why not focus more on it?
Instead, we were forced to watch Zi Hong and Miao Miao’s constant banter and their on and off relationship. Okay, I got it that they were the main couple, but it was too overused with their fights and then later they were so inactive in the final moments of the series that they could be easily forgotten if they weren’t needed to persuade Dong Han and Zi Yan to let go. Their moments were mostly episode fillers so we could wait for more developments of the main plot to unveil itself.
What was the most infuriating thing about the ending? Yang Yong Zhao got away. Seriously? He was the mastermind of the Returning Home Project, and I swear, I always thought that the mastermind was the guiltiest one. Even if Dong Han and Zi Yan carried out the later parts of the plan, they were misled by him to hate and to continue on. How could he get the free ticket out just because he was Chief Zheng’s senior and because he was Miao Miao’s grandfather? I don’t care how old he was, he was still guilty. If the others were going down, he had to go down as well. To think that Miao Miao was soooo into finding her childhood friends and in trying to protect people closer to her, I felt it strange that she accepted that Zi Yan went to prison and her grandfather didn’t. Not to mention how she fought so much with the police just because Zi Hong was in confinement twice in the past yet didn’t do anything for Zi Yan? Okay, so I got it that priorities with her and some others in here were seriously messed up. But what about Chen Jie? Chen Jie letting it go as well was somewhat unbelievable for me. Seriously? I know Chen Jie had calmed down since his last aggression with targeting Dong Han the first few episodes while trying to figure out who the mole was. Yet I don’t think that he would be the type to let it go so easily and telling Ah Gang and Xiao He so lightly that their boss told them to forget about it. He put his own brother in prison! How could he let a little connection get in the way? Just because Yang Yong Zhao was their advisor and was one of the most respectable cops in the good old days? To think that Chief Zheng was so strongly vouching to seek out the truth and do what was right, he sure took the cowardly path and brushed things under the rugs once again, like some people in here. I was really disappointed in him.
Yong Mei’s sole existence was for others to protect her. Then it changed to how she got a bigger role in the turn of events because she was carrying Dong Han’s baby. That meant she was the one responsible for breaking the whole hatred cycle between all parties, at last, uniting some families together. Aside from that, I swear I couldn’t even sympathize with her or anything. I’m not trying to pick on her, but the plot had led me to think so. The point that her pregnancy didn’t make sense made it less convincing too. I got why the writers wanted it to go that way since I already stated above with how it brought the families together. But it didn’t make sense. Dong Han was avoiding her like the plague previously. If it was the hospital scene, it was too unconvincing. I don’t even think he was well enough to do anything. (Sorry, but the writers led us there–like Percy had pointed out to me, so I don’t feel bad for going “there.”) If it was after they got out of the hospital, then I would understand. I think there were some scenes that got cut, but it was in one of the BTS regarding Dong Han and Yong Mei’s scenes. That might have explained it. Yet what was the point of making Yong Mei involved with Dong Han aside from just making peace with the other side? Even if Dong Han was revenge-driven and had gone insane with his tactic, and went into a killing spree, but we–as the audience–couldn’t help but feel really bad for him since he lost his whole family after all. Making him betray Zi Yan was the worst.
Who did Dong Han love–Zi Yan or Yong Mei? Many had asked this question on The New World Facebook page. Pan Bo Xi had posted a picture of Dong Han and Zi Yan as the final moments of the drama were airing. When he was asked, he had said whichever picture he posted, that was the answer. (Go here.) During the flashback of their face-off scene, Dong Han had told Zi Yan that their relationship had never changed. That was the obvious answer. Even if he had cared enough for Yong Mei, but with his words, it was mostly because of the baby (and possibly guilt from using her).
What was the point of surrounding the events on Zhang Guo Tang since the beginning and making a mountain out of it all? I swear it was another wasted route. Well, they wanted to create suspense and lead us astray, but after we found out it was only an accident, it seemed like Zhang Guo Tang’s existence was just there to fill time. Yet I felt if he was the final bad guy, it would have cranked up the hype even more. Because seriously? Although lots of things had happened after Zhang Guo Tang died, it seemed to be recycled and anti-climatic, to say the least. Like how Zi Hong already found out that Zhang Guo Tang said it being an accident. Yet they rehashed that again AND he (Zi Hong) didn’t just say it out to the others and try to convince from there? Yeah, Dong Han and Yang Yong Zhao were going wacko already so there was no talking to them. But I felt the last bits–even with the plot finally revealing Zi Yan as Xiao Cao, the details rehashed again. It was like, hello, we already know that. Could someone show some more proofs instead of crying out the innocent card and saying it was an accident? Yeah, I understand it was an accident because things didn’t turn out the way they thought it would so that was why it was called an accident. I got it. But I hated that they kept crying out their innocence when it was obvious nothing would come out good with the location along with the weather condition of that day. They wouldn’t know for sure if it would rain. But the curve and all? Just a little maneuver and an accident could occur. I don’t care how much they regretted it. And it didn’t matter if Project Jing Hai wasn’t what the others thought it to be. It was just a bunch of excuses to shrug off responsibilities. If they had said: “We tried, but we messed up”, it was easier to swallow. Instead, it was about “We’re innocent, we didn’t know that would happen” type of thing. The other reason for making Zhang Guo Tang the main villain works better? I seriously think he was the other person, aside from Dong Han, who actually helped move the plot forward. Or we would all be in a limbo of forever going through Zi Hong and Miao Miao’s banter and makeup scenes.
Jia Yuan’s death was really for nothing. Seriously? This was the other reason why I hated the ending. Or more like how Yang Yong Zhao got away with it. Although Jia Yuan sacrificed herself because she didn’t want to be used as a pawn for Zhang Guo Tang to put pressure on Zi Hong, it all had to do with Yang Yong Zhao’s grand plan. He was the one who called Zhang Guo Tang and got Zhang Guo Tang to come back. He couldn’t predict Zhang Guo Tang’s moves or didn’t care. He only wanted to execute his plan, so when it went haywire and Zhang Guo Tang was on the loose, running his own agenda, other people got hurt. One of the most innocent people in this matter was Jia Yuan. Her luck was seriously terrible. Her father incurred so much debt that she had to deal with it and even had to resort to being a call girl to pay off the debts, which she had borrowed from Hua Jie’s place to pay off the other ones first before getting rid of this one. She had to protect her brother so that was the only way for her, or at least she thought of it as that way. She didn’t paint herself as the victim or the pitiful one yet was pitied by others, including the audience. She said many times, especially to Zi Hong and later to Jiang Jian Ming, that she wanted to solve her problems her own way. She didn’t cling to anyone for help–or didn’t want to if it wasn’t necessary. She was also very brave, having endured so much already and having to protect her brother (as said before). In the end, what happened? Although it was her choice to sacrifice, I felt like her final moments were just a little crying from some parties and then that was it. She was forgotten away, it seemed like no one cared to seek justice for her anymore. They had other things to do, so they just wanted to brush her off. I’m not saying once a close one dies, we have to always be morbid. We still have to move on with our lives, but I felt Jia Yuan’s death was like it just happened and forgotten so quickly. Things happening made it hard to just focus on mourning for her, but I had a feeling like even Zi Hong no longer cared. That suck. Her brother didn’t know so it wouldn’t count. But I would expect more than five to ten minutes of crying.
Was it Zi Hong’s mother’s fault that the accident of twenty years ago happened? Well, I’m not trying to blame the poor old woman here, but Zi Hong said it himself in episode 15 that it could be an accident or not, because of how he and his mother might be the target of the “warning.” It might as well be so, but those other two families were seriously unlucky. Moral of the story: Stay away from married men! I don’t care how talented they are or like how it seemed that their married life didn’t look too happy or whatever else. They chose it. Don’t justify their actions or yours if you wanted to step toward that path. (And this was the other reason why I hated that Dong Han’s story sort of sounded like Jiang Jian Ming’s too. Not married but it made it similar to the triangle and all. I don’t care if Yong Mei threw herself in front of him, he could say “no” or stop her. So yeah, I’m not going to blame her only just because of my biases, I’m blaming his lack of self-control too.)
Who were the true heroes? Many might think I’m crazy by now. I did not put them in just because they’re my favorite couple. However, I think that if they hadn’t done what they did–minus Dong Han going on a crazy killing spree, no one would know. Everything regarding the accident and the other matters kept getting brushed under the rug. If they hadn’t created some commotion, the others would just plain continue to carry on with their lives, thinking they did right. Even if two wrong doesn’t make a right or whatever it is often splashed around, in this case, they got through. Even if it was because Yong Mei’s connection that forced her father to take some actions, it was still something. Then talking about them, it brought up another sense of frustration upon me again, because of how Yang Yong Zhao had involved both Dong Han and Zi Yan into the plot but never included Zi Hong or Miao Miao. Well, not until recently, but that had failed. Of course, it was already obvious that he wanted to keep Miao Miao out of it–as he had said before. Yet it meant that he was all right with using Dong Han and Zi Yan as tools to forgo his plans. His pitiful talks indicated that he cared for them, but to me, it seemed so fake. And obviously, Miao Miao was his granddaughter, so how could she be involved, right?
If the series is cut back to eight episodes, I think it would be a lot better and more enduring, even with the current ending–more or less. Just cut out some unnecessary bantering and some rehashed of information. I didn’t need fifteen episodes to tell me it was all because of some stupid misunderstanding. Lives were lost, people were hurt. How could the ones who were victims end up paying for it while the others who had–even if unintentionally–caused the pain lived so freely? (It didn’t count that Mrs. Jiang finally confessed, it was too late.) I didn’t even know why there were some details that were added if the Jiang weren’t that guilty about the whole matter, like how they paid Zhang Guo Tang off and didn’t tell Chief Zheng or the other police officers about it. Well, Zhang Guo Tang was crazy, but the constant hiding stuff from the others made it harder for them to move forward with their investigation or knowing what to expect.
And lastly, I don’t know why I need to justify myself anymore. But I guess I will have to do it or I’ll be facing a lot of wraths (even if invisible). I will say that I pick on characters in here throughout my review/summaries, but it’s seriously directed at the characters and plot, NOT the actors and actresses themselves. I think they’re a wonderful team. Watching BTS has made the audience understand more about them, but had also made me like them even more. Angela Lee’s actually really cute off-screen, it’s just that she has the weepy, weakling character throughout. Then there’s Rabbit Yang and Zheng Ting Hu’s hilarious rehearsals behind the scenes. The rest of the cast was equally funny, especially Zhao Jie (Chen Jie, lol), who was seen up to no good at times when they were practicing or just waiting for a scene change. Jean Lee was quite pro, slipping in and out of characters so fast that it had amazed some of the people working with her. Pan Bo Xi and Dou Hua Mei, no need to say more, but they were really funny–and cute.
*WARNING*: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you DO NOT want to be spoiled, please DO NOT read. You have been warned.
So the conversation resumed with how Yong Mei was still sore over her missed chance of talking to Dong Han with whatever it was that she claimed was so important. Then Yong Mei decided to extract information from Zi Yan. Zi Yan responded that she didn’t know what was going on either, but it was possibly because of work pressures. (Yeah, people actually have things to do aside from catering to rich princess’ commands.) Anyway, Zi Yan had to go into explaining how it had to do with their duties and how dangerous it was, not knowing if they had a tomorrow. Zi Yan asked for Yong Mei’s understanding.
That night, Zi Yan tried to talk to Dong Han about it. Yet Dong Han reasoned that it was Yong Mei who forced him into taking such drastic measures. Zi Yan pointed out that even if Dong Han did such, Yong Mei wouldn’t give up either. Dong Han asked Zi Yan if she was also forcing him to take action. It indeed was hard, considering Zi Yan’s standing. Zi Yan then said that seeing how sad Yong Mei was, it had made her sad as well. Then things got quiet. Dong Han seemed so distant and somewhat scary. Zi Yan spoke up again, saying how he was making her worry. He finally spoke up and said that he feared that one day she couldn’t stand it anymore and would hate him. He walked over to her to take her hands into his before saying that if that day indeed came, he hoped that she could say goodbye to him without any hesitation.
Apparently the person whom Dong Han wanted Zi Hong to meet up with was his mother. At least his current mother. Ms. Liu was actually one of their neighbors since ages ago too and known their parents quite well. Ms. Liu said that she was really happy to see them all reunited again. Then she launched into telling them a story, which she said would be right to tell them at that point. It happened fifty years ago when she was only six years old. Basically, their livelihoods were quite good with everyone helping one another within the fields and were like a family working together during harvest seasons. It wasn’t just like that, but overall, it paved a nice picture. Yet thirty years later (which meant it was twenty years ago), things changed. That was also the time of the land redevelopment incident occurred and how everyone was forced to move. Like it was said many times before, there were only three families who didn’t sign the papers. However, Qing Ting’s mother reassured them and suggested that they gathered around and planted the trees–and that one day they would return to see their effort flourishing. That day was June 23rd (aka the day they gathered to plant the trees). No one knew what the future would bring them. What they didn’t expect were the accidents that had caused five deaths and four injuries that occurred several days later. Some of them had agreed to take the kids as a gesture to their old fellow neighbors. At that time, Ms. Liu’s husband was still alive and they didn’t have any kids and their financial situation was stable so they took in Xi Shuai. Xiao Cao was also adopted by another family yet she didn’t want to be disturbed anymore. So that was when Ms. Liu paused and told the others not to go seek out Xiao Cao either. Ms. Liu resumed her story with how not being able to locate Qing Ting until later and heard that he’d been adopted by Shen You Fu. Then there was his mother, so they decided to take turns in visiting her and taking care of her. So whenever Zi Hong came, they knew. At least Ms. Liu saw them together. Ms. Liu blamed herself for what happened, because if they hadn’t moved and had forged together perhaps it wouldn’t turn out like that with how Qing Ting’s mother became that way, and how Xi Shuai’s parents and younger brother had died, and also Xiao Cao’s parents. Then Dong Han had to step forward to comfort her, saying it wasn’t like that. She pulled herself together and said she wouldn’t mention it anymore. It was now about finding out what really happened twenty years ago (aka the real reason behind it all). Miao Miao jumped in to ask if it was the accident. Ms. Liu said it wasn’t just that, but also Project Jing Hai. That got Zi Hong’s interest. Ms. Liu confessed that she only heard about it ten years after she left the town and didn’t know much about it as she would like to. However, she was sure that it had to do with Jiang Jian Ming. (So it made sense now that Dong Han was glaring at him with much hatred that one time when he came to put pressure on them.) Ms. Liu said it was just them now, but it was about time that they seek justice for the others. (It also made sense how Dong Han kept his goal clear after all these years.) Ms. Liu continued by saying that they have a plan to force Jiang Jian Ming into speaking up and revealing the truth behind it all. (Why are they saying all these to Miao Miao? She was going to rat them out with her best pal.) Dong Han quickly revealed their next step, which caused Miao Miao to be shocked by it (obviously). Their plan was called “Returning Home” (回家). Miao Miao asked if they were joking with that part of the plan. Zi Hong was still thinking. Ms. Liu said she hoped that they would join in with the plan, but she also told them to think it over. She then excused herself, saying that the person who drove her there was waiting for her.
Dong Han then took them to the forest–where the trees were–and told them how his mother had taken him there from time to time. Then he had placed the wooden tags on the trees when he returned to accept the mission, and how he was really happy to read Miao Miao’s article. At first, when he heard about Zi Hong’s identity being Qing Ting, he didn’t know what to make of it. It wasn’t until they confirmed Zi Hong’s identity through the sealed files that he dared to believe. That was also when he knew Zi Hong still remembered their childhood, and when he went to check out Zi Hong’s workplace, he was really touched to learn about the music cards. Because that was part of their childhood. He also realized that Zi Hong was like him, still wanting to avenge for their families. He wanted the other two to join them in their plan. Miao Miao said she wanted to join their plan too, but with how they wanted to cause some kind of explosion, it seemed too extreme. Yes, that was their plan. And then Zi Hong spoke up to say that many people would be hurt and be out of jobs, etc. Miao Miao also spoke up to agree with Zi Hong, saying how it would cause the ruptures in so many lives. Dong Han asked if they were no longer Qing Ting and Miao Miao, but were using their identities as Teacher Zi Hong and Reporter Yang speaking up now. Miao Miao asked Dong Han what would the others do then. Dong Han said if Jiang Jian Ming were to come out to admit and apologize for what happened then they wouldn’t take that step. Miao Miao asked if Dong Han was sure if it was really Jiang Jian Ming. (Of course, she had to speak up for her best pal’s families.) Miao Miao said those things needed evidence to be sure. Dong Han said if they agreed to join in on the plan, then his mother would show them the evidence. Zi Hong said it didn’t matter if there were evidence, the plan would affect too many people, and that they shouldn’t resort to such measures. Dong Han, even more upset by now, asked if Zi Hong had already forgotten what happened years ago. Zi Hong said he didn’t forget. The struggle continued between not wanting to drag other innocent people in versus how some people didn’t lose all family members went on for a bit more before Dong Han lost it and slammed Zi Hong into a tree. Yup, Dong Han totally lost it. He asked Zi Hong if Zi Hong really could get Jiang Jian Ming to admit his wrongdoings because it seemed like Zi Hong hadn’t kept his promise regarding how the three of them wouldn’t separate and how Zi Hong would take them to Miao Miao. He then reminded Zi Hong how he said he didn’t care that Xiao Cao was gone, but it wasn’t so. He really hated Zi Hong for breaking the promise that time when he woke up in the car and Xiao Cao was gone. After that lash out, Zi Hong couldn’t say anything but words of apologies. Dong Han finally let go of Zi Hong and turned away. After composing himself, he told Zi Hong not to apologize. He said him hating Zi Hong was just like hating himself because what he promised Xiao Cao, he couldn’t do it either. But what they could do now is make someone else apologize. He wanted to ask them one last time if they wanted to join or not. Miao Miao said it was possible, but they shouldn’t cause the explosion. It was now Zi Hong’s turn. Zi Hong said that he was like Dong Han in the past, hating and wanting to make someone pay. But then he thought it through already. Zi Hong said that his mother wouldn’t want to be the reason that he kills or harm others. Dong Han mentioned seeking justice, restoring what was lost, i.e their homes, etc. Zi Hong said those weren’t lost, and there were other ways to seek justice. It was Miao Miao who reminded him of it. Dong Han asked them one last time if that was their answer. Dong then asked if Zi Hong was able to not kill Zhang Guo Tang after finding him and would hand him over to the police. Zi Hong said he would after he could find the answers he needed. Dong Han nodded, saying that they didn’t need to join forces. Zi Hong asked why not. Dong Han said it was because the roads that they were traveling on weren’t the same one. Zi Hong asked if Dong Han wanted to kill “him”. The “him” in question wasn’t too clear, but Dong Han didn’t answer at first so Zi Hong persisted. Dong Han said that those were Zi Hong’s words, not his. Miao Miao interfered again, but it wasn’t to lecture Dong Han, not yet. She asked him if he killed the others hence reassuring her previously that Zi Hong didn’t do it. Yup, it was Dong Han. He followed Zi Hong and thought Zi Hong had the same plan as him when visiting one of Zhang Guo Tang’s henchmen yet Zi Hong left after leaving the music card so he knew it wasn’t the same. Dong Han said that plan was too slow with trying to lure Zhang Guo Tang out, he can’t wait. What he regretted the most was causing Zi Hong to be dragged in as the prime suspect. Zi Hong didn’t blame Dong Han, but he said those two were still innocents. Dong Han asked back if his family was as innocent. Zi Hong brought up what Chief Zheng said previously about a third party, which was Dong Han’s side, NOT Zi Hong like Chief Zheng had suspected. Dong Han said it was all right if Zi Hong used the word “our” instead of “your” side since he still wanted the other two to join. Zi Hong said he didn’t want the whole an eye for an eye type of thing. Miao Miao asked if Ms. Liu knew about the killings. Dong Han said if the other two didn’t say, she wouldn’t know. Dong Han then took out a cell phone and handed it to Zi Hong, saying if Zi Hong dial the number on there, he would reach Ms. Liu and Zi Hong could tell her that they agreed to join. Zi Hong said he hadn’t agreed. Dong Han turned around and smiled (which is creepy for the situation. What he said next confirmed my suspicion). He said that he saw Zi Hong burned the evidence that day so he already filmed a clip of it, and had intended to use it as a joke later when they reunited before destroying the clip. However, at this point, he could use it as evidence against Zi Hong. Miao Miao scrunched up then, calling Dong Han as “Liu Dong Han” instead of Xi Shuai like before, asking if he really wanted to do that. Dong Han said that it was up to that point, he had no choice but to do so. And he didn’t want Zhang Guo Tang to land into their hands. Miao Miao said she could call Chief Zheng up and tell him about the whole thing. Dong Han said she would risk his arrest. He knew the other two wouldn’t do that to him. Miao Miao jumped back to calling him “Xi Shuai” yet he said not to waste any more time. (Finally!) He gave them the ultimatum, either join or risk Zi Hong’s arrest. Zi Hong said the more Dong Han pressure him, the more he wouldn’t join. Dong Han apologized one last time, saying that he really didn’t want to do it. But regardless of what happened, they were still his family. Miao Miao cried out that if they were really family, it wouldn’t turn out like that. (I thought we were moving forward? Why the roundabout again?) Dong Han said that after it was all done, he would clarify everything and accept the punishment, whatever that might be. Of course, that would also mean clearing Zi Hong’s reputation. Then he left.
So it seemed like Zi Hong chose not to join hence the consequences. The special team – minus Dong Han – was listening to the news while figuring out the person who filmed the clip. Xiao He said he couldn’t figure it out, but had received the e-mail. Elsewhere, Zi Hong was asking Miao Miao if she wanted to return home or follow him to find Zhang Guo Tang. She chose the second choice so they were on their way. After the news segment, Chen Jie asked if Chief Zheng wanted to bring Zi Hong in. Chief Zheng asked if Dong Han was with Zi Hong, and gave the orders to bring Zi Hong in. As Dong Han witnessed Zi Hong and Miao Miao driving away in Zi Hong’s car, he received the call from Chen Jie. Dong Han lied and said that the other two had misled him and had fled already. Chen Jie told Dong Han to get on it, and Dong Han said he got it. Back at the headquarter, Chief Zheng told Xiao He to track their cell phones while he went to call Yang Yong Zhao. As the others were going on their way, Zi Yan was still standing around thinking. Had she caught onto something? Even if she hadn’t figured out that far out conspiracy, could she possibly figure out what Dong Han was doing? Like possibly acting suspiciously during their previous get together?
Miao Miao finally received the call from her grandpa. They stopped somewhere so Miao Miao could take the call. Her grandpa was wondering if she wanted to return home. She said she knew Zi Hong was innocent so she wanted to go with him. Grandpa Yang pointed out it wasn’t as easy as she put it. The judge wouldn’t see it her way and she would be dragged in as well. She said the more she had to accompany Zi Hong. She reassured him she would be all right. How could he not worry? He wanted to talk to Zi Hong, so Miao Miao had no choice but to hand the phone over to Zi Hong. Grandpa Yang said that Chief Zheng believed Zi Hong was innocent yet things were getting complicated so he couldn’t do anything else but to proceed according to his duties. Zi Hong said he understood. Grandpa Yang told Zi Hong that it wasn’t too late to turn back. Zi Hong said he wasn’t going to turn back, and that he didn’t do anything wrong. Grandpa Yang said that fleeing would be difficult. Zi Hong said he knew. Grandpa Yang knew he couldn’t change their decisions, but told Zi Hong to use his life to protect Miao Miao. Zi Hong promised.
Zi Yan decided to interrogate Tom again. She was prepared this time. She had a recorded clip of Tom’s mom sending her regards to Tom. Tom’s mom wanted him to return home. She said she was still capable of earning money and his sister was going to work soon, so he didn’t need to get into sticky situations to get money. Tom said that the cops were so despicable with using his family against him. Zi Yan told him to listen to another clip. That next clip, his mom told him to let Zhang Guo Tang deal with the punishments, and that they didn’t need to worry about him anymore since he already got captured. She also said that the cops had promised to decrease Tom’s sentence if he were to cooperate. Surprised, Tom wanted to listen to the clip again. Zi Yan asked which part, and then she asked Tom if he didn’t know. She quickly told him how they already arrested Zhang Guo Tang earlier that day–along with some of the other henchmen.
Meanwhile, Zhang Guo Tang was somewhere eating noodles and watching the latest news segment. It was the one they’d been talking about, regarding Zi Hong destroying evidence. He soon turned off the TV and picked up his phone. It was one of his henchmen calling in to report the latest at Zi Hong’s house. Shen You Fu had returned home already. Zhang Guo Tang told them to make the move. They said that there were also two cops standing guard. Zhang Guo Tang said the more they should take action. So they did. The two gangsters went in and knocked out the two cops on guard before getting to Shen You Fu.
Zi Yan finally succeeded in convincing Tom to cooperate. Chief Zheng was proud of her. Yet he had to tell her of the bad news with Shen You Fu being kidnapped already. He said it was probably Zhang Guo Tang’s doing. He also told Zi Yan to tell Dong Han to pick her up and join them at the location. So Zi Yan suited up after getting off the phone. As she was on the way out, she tried to call Miao Miao but was unsuccessful. She told Dong Han about it when she got into the car. Dong Han seemed disturbed and reflected his bad moods when Zi Yan asked him about it. Yet they had a mission to carry out, can’t talk long. Then elsewhere, Zi Hong wanted to drop Miao Miao off. It was because he wanted Miao Miao to wait for his father and they could go together, if not, then Miao Miao should leave first. He said that if he confronted Zhang Guo Tang, he needed to do it alone. It would be harder with Miao Miao around. Miao Miao said they had guns yet Zi Hong reasoned that they wouldn’t use it since that was like signaling to the cops. Miao Miao finally got out after threatening Zi Hong to keep his promise.
Then came the confrontation. Or more like Zhang Guo Tang’s own interrogation. He, of course, wanted to ask Shen You Fu of Zi Hong’s whereabouts. He wanted to avenge his brothers’ deaths. Yet Zhang Guo Tang didn’t need to wait long. Zi Hong was on his way. (Okay, wait, how did Zi Hong know they were there? Or did Zhang Guo Tang sent out some sort of signal? Because he apparently was really unsuccessful in locating Zhang Guo Tang before hence dragging the situation until now. Or was it because of Miao Miao and all the debates that he couldn’t really get a move on the search until now?) While one of his men went outside to check on the situation, Zhang Guo Tang was saying how he and Shen You Fu used to be “dogs” for Jiang Jian Ming. But the difference between them now was he, Zhang Guo Tang, no longer was. Before he could take any action toward Shen You Fu, he heard more noises outside. He had to go and check it out for himself. When he came out, Zi Hong was in a deadlock with Paul. Zhang Guo Tang told Paul to finish Zi Hong yet at the last minute, Zi Hong managed to turn the situation around and tossed the knife toward Zhang Guo Tang, injuring his hand so he had to drop the gun. (That was seriously fake, lol. Cool in a way, but fake.) The struggle between Zi Hong and Paul continued until the cops arrived. Yet they were too late. They only discovered Paul and another dude tied up outside. No one else was there. Indeed, Zi Hong had already tied Zhang Guo Tang up and was on his way to somewhere. Zhang Guo Tang asked him why killed the other two men and if Zi Hong wanted to do the same to him. Zi Hong said he didn’t kill those guys, and that it would be too easy to kill Zhang Guo Tang off. Then back at the scene, Chief Zheng told them to send out a notice to find Zi Hong.
Then the dramatic confrontation out by the seaside. Zhang Guo Tang said that he already told them time after time that what happened 20 years ago was an accident. He also recounted that he and the other two guys (the same ones who got killed by Dong Han already) had also gone toward the hillside to check it out too, but it was too late for some people. Zi Hong, obviously, didn’t believe him. Zhang Guo Tang was done. He didn’t want to play with Zi Hong anymore. He told Zi Hong to kill him already and get it over with. Zi Hong proceeded with tying his hands and legs together and said that it was getting dark soon (i.e. high tides) so they could find out if Zhang Guo Tang was in fear or not by then. Zi Hong then went to sit safely elsewhere to wait. That was when Zhang Guo Tang started yelling for Zi Hong and demanded he return. Zi Hong didn’t return until Zhang Guo Tang finally yelled out that he would confess. Zhang Guo Tang stuck with his answer about it being an accident. Zi Hong kicked him back to drink some more water and asked him the leader behind it all (aka the person giving them the commands). Zhang Guo Tang yelled out that it was Jiang Jian Ming. Jiang Jian Ming wanted them to teach the ones who didn’t want to move a lesson yet it wasn’t to kill, it was just some warnings. So the accident was really an accident. Zi Hong didn’t want to hear more of Zhang Guo Tang’s nonsense reasons so he said he would go for a bowl of noodles before returning. Zhang Guo Tang, in his desperate attempt, yelled out if Zi Hong didn’t believe, then go ask Jiang Jian Ming for himself. What Zi Hong didn’t expect was how Zhang Guo Tang told Zi Hong to go ask his father too. That stopped Zi Hong from going so Zhang Guo Tang continued on. He said that was why Shen You Fu wanted to adopt Zi Hong because that incident was really an accident so he felt bad and wanted to make it up for Zi Hong. Zhang Guo Tang said that the three of them were outsiders so how could they know Zi Hong and the other two families. Shen You Fu was in charge of keeping watch and informing them when the three families arrive. That was when they took action and then caused the accident. Zhang Guo Tang said there were four people in charge of doing that mission, and the fourth person was Shen You Fu. Zi Hong was so riled up by Zhang Guo Tang’s words that he went back to kick him. (Wow, who was talking about not hurting others before when he was lecturing Dong Han?)
Back at the headquarter, the others were able to locate Miao Miao and Shen You Fu but no Zi Hong. Chief Zheng guessed that Zi Hong must have gone a different way with Zhang Guo Tang. He told them to send out more people to look for those two. Dong Han was nowhere to be seen either. Zi Yan said he was in the restroom, but who knows? Dong Han was indeed in the restroom, but he was checking to make sure no one was there. Before he could do anything though, he received a message from Yong Mei. She wanted to meet up the next day. He pocketed his phone again before taking the lid off of one of the toilets. He emptied the water before taking out a plastic bag – with a phone inside. (Clever. Old trick but still clever.)
So Zi Hong was still threatening Zhang Guo Tang and getting him to talk. He wanted to know what Zhang Guo Tang had that caused him to gain an upper hand with Jiang Jian Ming hence returning. Zhang Guo Tang soon blurted out “Project Jing Hai”. Zi Hong asked him about it. He said he also wanted to know. Zi Hong then asked if it had anything to do with Jiang Jian Ming. Like some of them suspected, the party in charge of the project was Jiang Jian Ming’s wife’s family. The whole fiasco of years ago had to do with Jiang Jian Ming along with his wife’s family, the Yan. It also had to do with Head Councilman Luo – or so Zhang Guo Tang said. Zi Hong said maybe he was innocent. Zhang Guo Tang said the money was already handed over. Zi Hong asked when, and the response was April 22nd. Zi Hong said if he already achieved his goal, why was he still around hurting people? He said it wasn’t so simple, and that he couldn’t return home, etc. He wanted Jiang Jian Ming to tell Head Councilman Luo to give him a guaranteed letter, and the contents would be giving him special privileges if the man were to advance toward his next rank. Zi Hong said it would be impossible for the other party to agree. Zhang Guo Tang confirmed that the other party didn’t agree hence he couldn’t end his mission. Zi Hong said it was ending now. Before he could say anything else, his phone rang. It was the phone Dong Han gave him earlier. Zhang Guo Tang then spoke up to say that he could give Zi Hong money. Zi Hong said not killing Zhang Guo Tang was already a special privilege so Zhang Guo Tang shouldn’t negotiate with him. As Zhang Guo Tang was still trying to persuade Zi Hong, Dong Han was getting impatient with attempting to make contact since Zi Hong still didn’t pick up. Zi Hong dropped Zhang Guo Tang off at the police station before leaving. Then he decided to pick up Dong Han’s call at last. Dong Han told him not to give Zhang Guo Tang up to the police because that was part of their plan with calling Zhang Guo Tang to come back (i.e. pressuring Jiang Jian Ming). But it was too late. One of the police officers had already gone out to fetch Zhang Guo Tang. (I knew it! I was right! It was Dong Han! Even if Chen Jie had to apologize to him!) OMG, really? Zi Hong went back and it was too late so he had to go again. He dared to blame it on Dong Han for not saying it out? Dong Han said that he tried to call many times already but Zi Hong didn’t pick up. Then Dong Han said that it didn’t matter anymore since he would find another way. Zi Hong pondered why they had to bring Zhang Guo Tang back. Dong Han said that he didn’t have time to explain. Zi Hong warned him not to go too far or he couldn’t return. Dong Han told Zi Hong he better worry for himself since Chen Jie was out looking for him. Dong Han told Zi Hong to flee.
Dong Han finally met up with Zi Yan and Xiao He in the control room. Zi Yan updated Dong Han on Zhang Guo Tang’s status. Xiao He was commenting on how cool it was to see Zhang Guo Tang being wrapped up like that and tossed out at the police station. Dong Han asked about Zi Hong’s whereabouts. Xiao He said that he was trying to locate Zi Hong. Zi Yan told Dong Han that they should go first. Dong Han made some comments about the signals before leaving. As Chen Jie and Ah Gang were trying to decide on their next location, Xiao He was finally able to locate Zi Hong so they were on their way.
*WARNING*: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you DO NOT want to be spoiled, please DO NOT read. You have been warned.
After Dong Han crashed, Ah Gang rushed over to yell for someone to call 911 yet Dong Han objected. He mumbled in fragments about telling Zi Yan to call his mother. While Ah Gang tried to salvage the situation, Yong Mei could only cry on, asking Zi Yan what Dong Han was saying. That was also when Ah Gang cranked it up a notch by knocking on the car door, yelling for the driver to help. Then there was the whole thing with the girls telling Dong Han not to close his eyes or sleep (i.e. they were losing him to death).
All of those hectic situations had to phase out for Jia Yuan and Miao Miao’s scene though. Jia Yuan, upon leaving the newspaper place, had to make a very tough decision. She, of course, had overheard the most important parts of the previous conversation between Miao Miao and Yong Mei. So after much bitterness of the situation, Jia Yuan returned to the newspaper place to tell Miao Miao about what Zi Hong told her regarding his crush. Miao Miao thought at first that she had lost to one of her fellow classmates. However, Jia Yuan said that that person was Miao Miao. It was also then that Miao Miao looked serious again, realizing Zi Hong had crushed over her for two years in high school. Or at least had followed her during those times. Jia Yuan went on to say that she didn’t know why Zi Hong didn’t tell Miao Miao about it, but she knew it wasn’t just some past memories he was after. So from that, it could be said that it had been about 8 or 9 years already. Miao Miao corrected Jia Yuan by saying that it had been 10 years already. Miao Miao was now in tears and not knowing what else to say aside from how she’d never known. Yet Jia Yuan pointed out that she knew now, so it wasn’t too late. Then Jia Yuan left. Only when she was finally alone again that she dared to cry. It indeed was a tough decision for her. Then she tried to pull herself together again.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Chief Zheng was on the phone with Head Commissioner Luo as the others were waiting for news regarding Dong Han’s operation. Yong Mei was blaming herself for having gone out on that day, causing Dong Han to land in such a situation. However, Zi Yan told her not to say it anymore. Zi Yan was as worried for Dong Han, or possibly even more worried yet she was trying to keep calm for Yong Mei’s sake. She had glimpsed at her hand with some of Dong Han’s blood remnants still in her nails. After Chief Zheng got off the phone, she told Yong Mei that her father wanted her home immediately. Yong Mei wanted to stay because she wanted to know the result of Dong Han’s operation. Chief Zheng said that he didn’t have to explain yet Yong Mei should understand the situation quite well with how Zhang Guo Tang had already unleashed his wrath. Chief Zheng thought it was best that she listened to his and her father’s plan. It was for her own good. Yong Mei still wanted to stay a little more. Chief Zheng promised to let Zi Yan call her to tell her the results afterward. Aside from that, he didn’t want to risk her safety even more as of now. Yong Mei insisted on staying. Chief Zheng had to use a higher tone to talk to Yong Mei, telling her how dangerous it was at this point. He said that Zhang Guo Tang was not only dangerous but he didn’t care who got hurt, considering how he wanted to go forth with his plan at such a crowded place as that gathering. Zhang Guo Tang wouldn’t care if it was the hospital or somewhere else even more crowded. Chief Zheng continued by saying how Yong Mei was lucky that she didn’t get hurt, but Dong Han wasn’t that lucky. He said that his duties weren’t just about protecting her and her family but also to ensure that his colleagues get off work safely. He pleaded to her not to put him in a hard spot. Zi Yan finally interfered and told Yong Mei to go home first since she was there already. Yong Mei made Zi Yan promise to call her because she would be waiting for Zi Yan’s call. Zi Yan managed a smile and nodded. After Yong Mei finally left with Xiao Zhuang (another police officer), Chief Zheng took out a piece of paper and asked Zi Yan to do the honor of calling Dong Han’s mother. Yet Zi Yan said she didn’t need it since she already knew the number. Zi Yan waited until she was outside and had composed herself before calling Dong Han’s mother up to tell her of the news.
On the Zi Hong front, Miao Miao came to his house to look for him yet he wasn’t there. She called Mr. Shen and he told her Zi Hong moved out already. Mr. Shen called Zi Hong after Zi Hong had already tried to take care of his wound himself. Mr. Shen told Zi Hong that Zi Hong could go home anytime he wanted and that he was always welcomed. Considering how Zi Hong didn’t want to listen to him, he wouldn’t force Zi Hong to do stuff his way anymore but only wanted Zi Hong to know that he would be looking after Zi Hong’s mother. He told Zi Hong to be careful and do whatever he wanted to do. Zi Hong soon went to see his mother at the senior center yet found out that Miao Miao was there as well so he backed out of there, trying to avoid her. At that time, Miao Miao was talking to Zi Hong’s mother. She ended up pondering how Zi Hong had survived these past 20 years. And at that moment, Zi Hong was seen visiting the forest. Miao Miao admitted to Zi Hong’s mother that she always wanted to call her “Mom” because she lost her mother when she was still so little so she didn’t even remember her own mother. Soon, she left and realized Zi Hong might be there because of the wooden horse in front so she returned. Yet she didn’t see them in the room. She rushed to find the pair of mother and son. Before long, she found them at the spot where Zi Hong often took her out to talk to her and get some fresh air. Miao Miao was indeed envious of Zi Hong’s mother since she’d never seen him so happy before.
So Zi Yan returned to the secret headquarter along with the others after comforting Dong Han’s mother in the hospital. Chen Jie had requested to be removed from the special team. Zi Yan jumped in to say that it was easy for him to leave yet who was to be responsible for what happened. Chen Jie told her that they could do whatever they wanted with him. Zi Yan mockingly told him what did he mean by that. It seemed like he said it so easily. Yet she reminded him that today they had to face the enemy but Chen Jie dared to point his gun at his own team. Before long, Chief Zheng jumped in to stop Zi Yan–and told Chen Jie to present his case. Chen Jie said that he couldn’t explain his suspicion of Dong Han, not exactly. Yet Chen Jie said he always discovered Dong Han leaving in the middle of the night to who knows where and when confronted, Dong Han would always say that he was investigating Zhang Guo Tang’s whereabouts. Chief Zheng asked if Chen Jie was still suspicious of Dong Han at the moment. Chen Jie said he wasn’t so sure now. Chief Zheng asked if Chen Jie could trust Dong Han at that point. He responded possible. Chief Zheng then asked if Chen Jie was able to apologize to Dong Han if Dong Han returned safely. Chen Jie once again said that it was possible. Chief Zheng got up then and returned Chen Jie’s badge to him, telling him to prepare for the interrogation with that one suspect and that they would be able to seek out Zhang Guo Tang that day. After Chen Jie left, Zi Yan spoke up again. Chief Zheng told her not to say anymore since there were still many things he couldn’t disclose yet. Zi Yan said if they were to wait anymore, it might be too late. She stressed once again that it couldn’t be Dong Han, especially what happened earlier that day. Chief Zheng asked Zi Yan if she suspected Chen Jie. Zi Yan said that she couldn’t think of anyone else aside from Chen Jie, because Yong Mei had changed her schedule so unless it was some person within their team, others couldn’t possibly know. Chief Zheng asked why she had to suspect Chen Jie. She said that she saw him using a different cell phone to talk to someone. Chief Zheng said he was the one who gave Chen Jie the cell phone. Zi Yan said Chen Jie could have used the phone to call someone else. Chief Zheng asked if Zi Yan meant Zhang Guo Tang, and she admitted it. He said he hoped Zi Yan knew what she was saying. After that, he told her not to say any more of that nonsense, because it was more important that they go take care of the interrogation. So after Chief Zheng left, Zi Yan was pondering why Chief Zheng kept protecting Chen Jie. Ah Gang said that he also hated what Chen Jie did earlier that day, however, he didn’t agree with Zi Yan’s suspicion regarding Chen Jie. Zi Yan, disappointed, said she won’t mention it again then. Yet she stated that evidence would prove it all, asking for Ah Gang’s help in investigating Chen Jie. She said if afterward, she was wrong, she would personally apologize to Chen Jie. She also wanted Xiao He’s help. Ah Gang agreed.
Zi Hong couldn’t dodge Miao Miao. Not this time. She was already waiting for him when he came out of the senior center. She teased him at first yet later mocked herself for not knowing that someone was secretly in love with her for 10 years but she didn’t know. She said that Jia Yuan had disclosed it to her already. After going on and on, she told him that he didn’t need to tell her about dividing time between their mother. Yes, she’d taken his mother in as her own. She scolded him for his selfishness, causing her not being able to see their mother for 10 years already. She won’t let him do that again. He wanted to apologize to her. She didn’t want him to say those words anymore. She needed a hug. So he tried to brush her tears away and pulled her into a hug.
So the interrogation commenced. The suspect didn’t say anything, so Chen Jie was just wasting his breath. Outside, the other three were having a discussion among themselves. Zi Yan was saying how it was like one of those suicide assassins (死士). (Sorry, this part I had to get a bit creative since I was sort of stumped with how to translate it accurately although I know what it means, lol.) Anyway, those were from the ancient time, mostly coming from a poor background, they had to use their own life to provide for their family. In a way, the people who took them in or hired them already taken care of their funeral arrangements and whatnot so they didn’t need to worry about anything else. Ah Gang was surprised by the comparison yet later had to agree. Chief Zheng got a call from Xiao He, and Xiao He indeed managed to find out the suspect’s real identity. He had already sent the information to their cell phones. So back inside, Chen Jie was getting quite impatient, telling the suspect to say something. And indeed the other party spoke up, but instead of cooperating, he told Chen Jie to hit him if he dared. Chen Jie said he couldn’t hit him yet upon his release, there would be many people out there waiting for him.
So after they calmed down, Zi Hong and Miao Miao went back to their serious talk. She wondered why he never approached her, and wondered if it had to do with her grandfather. He said it really wasn’t like that. He didn’t know why. But he told her that during that one time chasing her, he ended up stopping side by side with her on the bicycle, hoping that she would notice him. She chided him for not calling out to her. He said he couldn’t. Actually, one time on a somewhat windy day, he chased her down, almost to her house, wanting to tell her that he was Qing Ting. He also wanted to bring her to see his mother. Yet he stopped in front of her house because he didn’t know if she had remembered him. During one of those hopeless moments, he wanted to go see his mother, seeking some comfort from her. Yet he didn’t, because he didn’t want her to see him like that, even if she didn’t recognize him anymore. Then there were times that he felt very alone because he had pondered about how the others had forgotten him, just like his mother. Yet after having gone to college and eventually serving his military duties, he finally was able to see more clearly. He felt that it was all right that they had forgotten him because he could still remember them. Then when he entered the workforce at the tech company, he always read the local newspaper, especially articles from the writer Miao Miao, because he knew it was her. He also returned to the forest a lot. Then when he saw the article about their childhood and seeing their picture, he got a shock out of it, because he didn’t realize that she remembered. That he didn’t need to worry or be afraid anymore because he had her. He then turned around and asked if Miao Miao understood and that she was the true thief in the matter, not him; implying that she’d affected his life more than she knew. Then they were back at it again, with her giving him a hard time and all. He was too cheap, so the final decision was having a meal at her house–with her doing the cooking. She said that her grandfather wasn’t around so it was all right and that he had to eat whatever she prepared.
So Miao Miao whipped some food for them both with some leftovers. Then she asked him why he’d moved out, and if it had to do with Zhang Guo Tang. He didn’t answer. She took a look at his wound and said that it was also hers. After some mushy talk, she said that she wanted it to be like how they were little, being tied together. She wanted to be tied to him just like that. He asked if she was serious because she would be enduring some hardship with him. She pointed out it was probably more than a little. She then took out the two wooden tags from the trees in the forest that she’d retrieved. She said it must be Xi Shuai’s intention. She said by taking it, it would allow Xi Shuai to know that they were back and they knew that he had returned already. While Miao Miao was hooking strings onto the wooden tags and turning them into necklaces, the scene zoomed to Dong Han still unconscious with doctors and nurses constantly checking-up on him–with the haunting music in the background. Then after Miao Miao was done with lacing the necklaces, she and Zi Hong helped each other put it on. She said that it wasn’t just them being together now, Xi Shuai and Xiao Cao would be together with them too.
Back at the hospital, Mama Liu was still there, looking at Dong Han through the window as the doctors and nurses were still tending to him. Zi Yan soon came up to her, asking her why she hadn’t gone to the hotel to rest yet. She said she didn’t want to, she wanted to watch over Dong Han. She then asked Zi Yan why Zi Yan still returned since it was so late already. She asked if Zi Yan also wanted to watch over Dong Han, and Zi Yan nodded. Through their conversation, it was revealed that Dong Han had mentioned Zi Yan with his mother, complimenting her on being a good colleague. Zi Yan was glad to hear that from Dong Han, and returned the compliment by saying that he was indeed a very courageous and determined person. Mama Liu said that Zi Yan also possesses those traits. One of the doctors soon stepped out to inform them that Dong Han’s situation had improved. They were allowed to go in and see him. Well, at least Mama Liu went in to see him while Zi Yan watched through the window.
So the next day Zi Yan went to Yong Mei’s house to meet up with her and talk it over regarding Dong Han’s matter. Yong Mei said that she couldn’t sleep last night. It was because she was worried about Dong Han and the other reason was that she was blaming herself for the incident. Zi Yan told her not to think of it anymore since it had already passed. Yong Mei went on to confide in Zi Yan that she liked Dong Han, not fearing that Zi Yan would laugh at her or tell her mother. She also wanted Zi Yan to help her. (Seriously?) Anyway, she said she couldn’t go to the newspaper place the upcoming days because of obvious reasons, heightened security and all. Yet she wasn’t worried since Miao Miao could take care of it. However, she wanted to go to the hospital to see Dong Han, after he was more stable that was. She wanted Zi Yan to help her regarding her mother’s side. (Seriously?) After much hesitation, Zi Yan finally agreed. And Yong Mei was more than happy so she didn’t see or couldn’t detect the uneasiness on Zi Yan’s face.
So another meeting with Head Commissioner Luo and his wife. Yet this time, because of Yang Yong Zhao speaking up, the wife finally shut up and even seemed to be more polite with him. Yang Yong Zhao was able to bring upfront what others had been trying to get through the Luo and the Jiang families. Chief Zheng had promised to work hard to find out about the mole. But Yang Yong Zhao brought up the topic of importance, which was it was soooo hard to investigate with them not knowing of Zhang Guo Tang’s motives. Head Commissioner Luo asked if it was because of his father in law. Yang Yong Zhao said he didn’t mean that. Head Commissioner Luo said that he was very grateful of what they’d done to protect him and his family, especially what happened to one of the police officers, but regarding his father in law, he couldn’t help. He continued by saying that they already asked his father in law, and he’d already answered all their questions. He even reminded them that Zhang Guo Tang was crazy, so they wouldn’t know of his motive either. Yang Yong Zhao went on to ask if the recent case really didn’t have anything to do with Chairman Jiang, and Head Commissioner Luo confirmed. Yang Yong Zhao wanted to talk to Chairman Jiang again yet the head commissioner said he already talked to Chairman Jiang so there wasn’t anything to discuss anymore. So Yang Yong Zhao spoke up to let them know of the possible consequences, outlining the facts so far, mostly relating to Zhang Guo Tang and his henchmen, and the recently arrested suspect. (Nice, I like his style.) Anyway, on the way back, Chief Zheng wanted to ask Yang Yong Zhao what Chairman Jiang’s secrets were. Yang Yong Zhao didn’t really say, but just ended up passing along some cryptic message.
So back in the control center, Xiao He finally couldn’t take it anymore and confronted Chen Jie. Apparently, Chen Jie had asked him to investigate the others as well, so Xiao He snapped at him by saying how they were all in the hospital already and Chen Jie still wanted him to investigate them. Xiao He said based on what Dong Han did today and ended up in the hospital had already proven that he wasn’t the mole. He wanted Chen Jie to tell him why Chen Jie still suspected Dong Han. Chen Jie said he would say it out after he had all the information. Xiao He responded by saying that he wasn’t going to help Chen Jie investigate anymore. Not until their boss said so. And Xiao He went all out saying that he didn’t care if they fired him either. He indeed had enough. Chen Jie said that he wasn’t like them. It got to the point that he told Xiao He to perform his duties, not playing ‘brothers’ or whatever game it was.
After he left, Xiao He went to meet up with Ah Gang and Zi Yan. Xiao He had recounted his conversation with Chen Jie earlier. Ah Gang couldn’t believe Chen Jie was like that. Well, he knew Chen Jie was stubborn regarding his principle, but he didn’t realize that Chen Jie had said that he would apologize to Dong Han in front of Chief Zheng earlier, but now he went behind their backs to investigate Dong Han again. Zi Yan said she wasn’t the least bit surprised by his actions. Xiao He said that was quite upsetting, it was hard to not say anything. However, he said that didn’t make Chen Jie the mole. He didn’t want to be like Chen Jie, kept suspecting one another again because they were a team. Zi Yan said she understood, but she pointed out if there was indeed a mole within them, it was better to investigate it once and for all.
So they returned to the control center. Xiao He explained to them regarding the system tracking all calls and e-mails, etc. Ah Gang said that the reason Chen Jie suspected Dong Han was how Dong Han had used a public phone to call home because it couldn’t be tracked. Xiao He confirmed. Zi Yan then said that since she and Chen Jie were the first ones to know about Yong Mei’s new schedule, they were the most suspicious. So whoever left first was the most suspicious since that person could use that chance to inform Zhang Guo Tang. Ah Gang said it was impossible since Zi Yan and Dong Han left together. Xiao He was asking about Chen Jie’s whereabouts. Ah Gang said that he was out on a spy mission so Chen Jie had to go fetch him. Xiao He asked if Chen Jie was alone, and Ah Gang confirmed. Xiao He finally understood why Zi Yan and Ah Gang wanted his help in investigating Chen Jie. Ah Gang said they shouldn’t let their boss know at the moment. Xiao He was still hesitant. Yet he asked what the other two had in mind. Zi Yan answered that they were going to use some bait to spring a trap.
*WARNING*: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you DO NOT want to be spoiled, please DO NOT read. You have been warned.
The episode entered with Miao Miao preparing her breakfast and heading out the door. She thanked her bodyguards before getting in the car and heading to an unknown location. However, she was still griping over the stolen kiss, and how she didn’t stop Zi Hong previously. And she was also back to thinking about Zhang Guo Tang and the other matter, especially how she’d been targeted. She stopped herself from thinking any further about Zi Hong’s matters and forced herself to focus on driving. Before long, it was revealed that she was investigating Project Jing Hai. It was unfruitful, considering how that file was locked. Meanwhile, Zi Hong was looking for Jia Yuan at work, wondering why she wasn’t there. According to another coworker, Jia Yuan had asked for a long break.
Back at the secret headquarter, the team was discussing the recent murder. Chen Jie, of course, was the one presenting the case. After Chen Jie’s presenting of evidence and reports from the lab, Chief Zheng was pondering if it was Zhang Guo Tang getting rid of his own people. Zi Yan jumped in to say that it could possibly be Jiang Jian Ming. Ah Gang agreed with Zi Yan. He said that considering how Jiang Jian Ming had a lot of friends, whether the law-abiding type or the ones within the gangs. Then there was the whole thing with Zhang Guo Tang attacking Jiang Jian Ming time after time with different tactics, so it would make sense that Jiang Jian Ming wanted to take action. Xiao He finally got his chance to talk, saying that he had already found the song in the card, it was indeed the song “The New World” (新世界). What he found strange was how cards were usually having birthday or Christmas songs, but this type of card, it was the first time he saw it. They were saying how the card could either be left there by accident or on purpose. While Chen Jie was inputting his thoughts, he immediately turned to Dong Han. Indeed, a flashback revealed the reason for Dong Han being disturbed. The others finally turned to look at Dong Han as well. Chief Zheng was asking Dong Han for his views. He didn’t have anything to say about it. Chen Jie was still glaring him down. Yet Dong Han didn’t care to pay attention. he was very troubled by now. Chief Zheng said regardless of the reason or its details, they still had to turn it over to the local station. Their main goal was Zhang Guo Tang so they had to figure out his moves soon. Chen Jie and Ah Gang were in charge of seeking out Zhang Guo Tang while Dong Han and Zi Yan were responsible for Yong Mei’s safety. They had to increase their vigilance even more from now on. After saying that, Chief Zheng dismissed them, considering how he had to seek out Jiang Jian Ming.
And just like that, Chen Jie and Dong Han were once again in another face-off. Chief Zheng barely left and Dong Han was just making a move yet Chen Jie stop him to interrogate. Zi Yan, Ah Gang, and Xiao He were really feeling the hectic atmosphere of the room once again. Chen Jie asked Dong Han to whom the phone number actually belonged. Dong Han was wondering what Chen Jie was up to again. Chen Jie said that the records didn’t show that Dong Han had called home. Dong Han turned to ask Xiao He if he had a look. Xiao He, fearing Dong Han’s wrath, told Dong Han that he was just following Chen Jie’s order. Chen Jie told Dong Han not to lead them around in circles anymore. He said that the number was registered by a false name, so Dong Han should just tell him. He continued on by asking if that false name was Zhang Guo Tang. Dong Han smirked, asking if Chen Jie really wanted to go there. He told Chen Jie if Chen Jie really wanted to know, then go investigate on his own. Chen Jie said it would be much simpler if Dong Han would just cooperate and say it out. Dong Han had on his taunting look by now, saying that Chen Jie didn’t make things easier before with suspecting him and not trusting fellow cops. He told Chen Jie that life wasn’t just simple yes or no. He went on to lay out the choices for Chen Jie to choose, whether he, Liu Dong Han, was the mole. He repeated his previous suggestion, telling Chen Jie to go investigate on his own if Chen Jie really wanted to know the truth. Chen Jie said if Dong Han wanted to do that, then he was willing. Dong Han taunted Chen Jie again, he told Chen Jie to go ahead. Zi Yan finally got up from her desk and interfered, telling the guys to knock it off. She also told Chen Jie that she wanted to withdraw her previous suspicion regarding the mole. Chen Jie asked if she was playing him. She said if he didn’t want to before turning to Dong Han, asking him to whom that phone number belonged. Dong Han turned her down as well, saying that he couldn’t do that. She said if he couldn’t do it, then great, she would use her way to solve it. She asked Chen Jie the number once again, and Chen Jie actually obliged. What Zi Yan did next, shocked Chen Jie so much that he thought she was crazy. What did she do? She dialed the number. (LOL!) She said it would be faster that way rather than keep guessing, and they would finally get an answer. Chen Jie asked her what if it was Zhang Guo Tang. She said they would still know before shutting Chen Jie up. A woman answered the phone and Zi Yan pretended to be someone taking surveys from citizens. The woman on the phone told Zi Yan she was busy so she couldn’t help. Zi Yan apologized and hung up before turning to ask who that person was. Dong Han played it smack by saying maybe it was Zhang Guo Tang’s woman, lol. He gave Chen Jie an encouraging clap on the shoulder before saying that Chen Jie should quickly investigate since everyone was depending on his answer. He added that he wasn’t going to flee, he was waiting for Chen Jie to come and get him. Then he left. After that, Zi Yan turned to Chen Jie, asking if that was enough already. She went on to say if Chen Jie didn’t think that was enough, she could go and ask if that person was Dong Han’s mother or sister or someone else in his family. She could exhaust all the questions for Chen Jie, if he wanted. She said that it was more than enough already before leaving as well. Chen Jie was more than pissed off because of how the situation turned out. He turned to ask Ah Gang and Xiao He if they thought he was wrong as well. Ah Gang did the ‘X’ symbol with his hands, stating that Chen Jie shouldn’t ask him before leaving the room. Xiao He, being the only one left, totally felt the pressure of answering. He said he didn’t know who was right or wrong yet he didn’t like how things turned out at all. He was forced to leave as well, knowing that the intensity of the atmosphere was too thick, even if the others were already gone.
Zi Yan found Dong Han at their ‘isolated’ meeting place. She settled down next to him before asking if the woman on the phone was his mother. He didn’t answer at first, still pulling the long face. She asked if he was hiding that from her as well. He soon responded and told her yes, it was his mother. He went on further by disclosing her health condition and how she was still working. He also said that what his mother feared the most was receiving a call regarding him. Zi Yan said that her father was the same when he heard that she was going to become a cop. Yes, both parents feared that they would receive the call telling them that their children had died on duty. Zi Yan tried to make light of the situation by mimicking the call, and they laughed about it. Yet Dong Han soon turned serious and told her about his childhood, and how he’d always seen his mother making Christmas lights. Although she made Christmas lights, they had never had a Christmas tree at their place. However, his mother did take him to see public Christmas trees, where the lights were already placed on there nicely, sparkling. Upon seeing the lights shining brightly on the trees, she was very satisfied and very proud of her work. Zi Yan said that her father was the same, but with his culinary skills. Zi Yan ended up taking over the cooking tasks, but her father seemed very proud. Yet she said she could no longer see him smile, because he had already left. A brief silence between them before Dong Han asked her had she ever thought if one day she died, what would happen? She said she would live to be one hundred, and he will as well. Then later when they were on one of their missions to protect Yong Mei, Zi Yan texted Dong Han while they were in the car, saying that they would definitely live on to be one hundred. He texted her back and told her not to text during their mission. YET texted her again about a minute later telling her that they didn’t need to live to be one hundred, he could still like her. And that had made her smile. Still later, he was seen staring at Zi Yan and smiling when he saw her smile while watching Miao Miao and Jia Yuan bicker. (Or was he?)
Zi Hong came home to see Miao Miao waiting for him after a trip to see Chairman Jiang, wanting to lend some money. She told him she tried to investigate Project Jing Hai yet it was like he said, it was locked. She also said that the lady there promised to help her think of a way. He asked her if she still wanted to investigate. She said she still wanted to, because she wanted to know the truth and also because she trusted her grandfather. She then confronted him about that one time, asking him the real reason why he didn’t shake her grandfather’s hand – whether it was because he couldn’t due to his injury or because he didn’t want to. He didn’t answer. She then asked him about how long he’d scorched through, investigating her grandfather. He said since high school. She said that it meant he’d knew where they resided at yet didn’t meet up with her. He said that he didn’t like it that he was being interrogated, and she said she didn’t like it either. Soon, he said that he didn’t know if he had a future or anything to think about love or involve anyone. She wanted him to admit that he liked her, so he did. She then broke down, saying that she was so scared of what happened–and that her grandfather had said if the injury wasn’t on his hand, it would’ve been at his heart. She didn’t know why she didn’t apologize and thank him yet just kept yelling at him. Then when he took her to see his mother, she wanted to say thank you yet she wasn’t able to. She asked him if he was all right with her being so temperamental. He said he didn’t mind since he was even worst, so he wasn’t scared. Then they went to the forest again to check out the trees. She asked him if he could guess who had placed the wooden tags on the trees. He said it had to be Xi Shuai – and she agreed because Xi Shuai’s father was a woodcarver. She said she didn’t know where Xi Shuai was, but was wondering why he’d placed those wooden tags on there. Zi Hong said that Xi Shuai must have seen the news articles that she did, and had returned already hence doing so. Xi Shuai wanted them to know that he’d returned and still remembered them. Miao Miao said it was her grandfather that had sparked her inspiration with doing those memorial articles. She told Zi Hong not to be suspicious of him anymore. Zi Hong stayed quiet again, but Miao Miao said she would find a way to make him believe in her grandfather, just like how she believed him. She then said that she would help him investigate the truth regarding the incident of 20 years ago, but asked him to promise her not to go seek out Zhang Guo Tang on his own. He didn’t trust cops. She asked him why, but he didn’t answer exactly, just saying that he didn’t want to argue with her. She sighed out in exasperation before asking if it had to do with her grandfather. He said perhaps there was and perhaps not. She didn’t know why he kept picking on her grandfather. He said her grandfather was the first one to sign hence allowing others to follow so it was suspicious. After all that was said and done, he found it hard to trust anyone, especially the cops. She said that it seemed like he didn’t trust her either. He said he believed her, that he truly believed her. Yet she said it seemed like he was still keeping her in the dark regarding different matters. In the end, he told her that he was very happy to hear her call his mother “Mom”, and said that it seemed like the past Miao Miao had returned. He told her that if he wanted to go see his mother from now on, to go ahead, but wait for a certain day. She asked him what he meant. It seemed like he was driving her away again. He aggravated her on purpose by telling her if she wanted to leave, just leave. She questioned whether he really liked her or just the past her because of their childhood memories. He said maybe so, and received a slap from her after he mocked the kiss of that one time. She said she wasn’t leaving either, saying she wanted to wait and see if he would leave (aka giving up on the idea of going against Zhang Guo Tang on his own). He left after saying that they didn’t need to say goodbye.
Chief Zheng finally confronted Jiang Jian Ming. He went straight out asking if it had anything to do with Jiang Jian Ming. Chairman Jiang laughed and said that if Chief Zheng thought he was the killing type. No, Chief Zheng meant there were many people he knew. Chairman Jiang laughed again, a little louder this time, asking if Chief Zheng meant that he had paid some hired gun to do the deed. Chief Zheng said he only wanted to ask as part of the routine. Chairman Jiang asked if Chief Zheng didn’t believe him. Chief Zheng said that since it was a complicated matter, it couldn’t be disposed of just because someone said so. Chairman Jiang was definitely insulted. He said his answer was obvious, telling Shen You Fu to escort Chief Zheng out. Chief Zheng attempted to get through him but failed. He finally said even if he believed Chairman Jiang, Zhang Guo Tang might not. Chairman Jiang asked him what he meant. Chief Zheng quickly explained that if Zhang Guo Tang suspected him, he had to be very careful from now on. Then Chief Zheng told Shen You Fu that he didn’t need anyone showing him the way out, he knew. So he left.
Then came Zi Hong’s confrontation with Jia Yuan. He handed Jia Yuan an envelope, telling her to return to work tomorrow. It was the check, containing the money he lent from Jiang Jian Ming earlier. She asked where the money came from, and he said it wasn’t important, because it was hers now. She could use that money to end a certain thing. She asked him again where he lent it from, and he told her not to mind it. She asked him about how he was going to repay it with his current wage, and if she had to pay it back with him. He said she didn’t have to, only he would be paying the money back. She asked if he was pitying her, and he said no. She then asked if he was apologizing for what he’d said to her that night, and he also said no. She leaned into him and asked if he wanted to sleep with her. He told her not to joke around like that. She said what if she wanted to. He told her to knock it off, pay off her debts, and then return to work tomorrow before leaving. She stopped him, saying she hadn’t agreed. She said with her, she could repay the money in several months yet he had to use his whole life and couldn’t repay it. She wasn’t going to let him waste his youth like that. He told her to knock it off or he would get mad. She taunted by saying that he actually looked quite cute when he was mad before tearing the check-up. He went ballistic, yelling at her and asking her what she was doing. She hugged him, telling him not to be mad since she knew he was just worried for her. She had already accepted his concern yet she said it was enough, begging him not to force her anymore. He asked her if what she said to him that night was a message for him to help her, because the others were forcing her to continue taking ‘cases’. She said it wasn’t. She said she was just saying that. He said if he had known, and she said it wasn’t so. She finally let go of him and retrieved pieces of the check on the floor. He said that he would go get another one yet she told him not to. He said if she didn’t want to accept it, he could always go straight to the others and talk to them. She asked him if she was speaking a foreign language hence him not understanding, because she said that he wasn’t the only one knowing how to get mad, she was capable of it too. She wanted to rely on herself, regardless of the consequences. Yet she said the others had told her that if she was willing to go to Japan on a special assignment, they could cut her debt back quickly, and she could even earn enough for a new house for her and Xuan Xuan. Yet she had turned them down. So she told Zi Hong if he kept doing that, she might end up changing her mind. She ended the conversation by saying that she didn’t care about the check because money wasn’t what she wanted, but what she wanted he couldn’t give her. No one could save her at that point except herself.
Meanwhile elsewhere, Zhang Guo Tang was sending off his good brother by burning a set of tux and a promise to seek out the killers. He said he would make them pay one by one. So it wasn’t too out of it when he and his brothers were out casing the joint the next day. And indeed, he was ready to make a move regardless. He called his ‘cop’ friend to check on the situation, asking if that person was making a move or not.
So when Zi Yan caught Chen Jie on the phone with someone, it wasn’t too out of character to ask him about it. He said he didn’t need to report to her. She said that was true since he was the team leader, not Liu Dong Han. Yet she also said that it seemed like it wasn’t the same phone he often used. He said the superiors had given that phone to him so it was easier to report back and for safety measures. He asked if Zi Yan still had other suspicions. She said she didn’t. Then she handed him new paperwork, saying that Yong Mei wanted to go out later. He looked at the paper and said he thought that Mrs. Luo forbade all activities at the moment. Zi Yan said that Yong Mei insisted so Mrs. Luo couldn’t do anything about it. Chen Jie told her to go, but be extra careful, especially keeping an eye out for Dong Han. Zi Yan asked if Dong Han was also going. Chen Jie said if it wasn’t for Yong Mei and Zi Yan’s persistence in speaking up for Dong Han, he already got kicked out. So Chen Jie said whatever happens later, Zi Yan would be responsible for it.
Jia Yuan arrived at the newspaper place the next day in time to overhear Miao Miao’s conversation with Yong Mei. Jia Yuan tried to focus on her task at the computer, narrowing down the problem to the loose cable before firing the computer up once again. Miao Miao was confiding in Yong Mei with how perhaps Zi Hong never cared for her, but only their childhood memories. It got Yong Mei worried. Yet Miao Miao soon moved on to tease Yong Mei with liking Dong Han. Yong Mei ended up being conned by Miao Miao with admitting that she indeed liked Dong Han. Miao Miao asked her if Dong Han knew. Yong Mei said not yet but he will know today. So after some more random teasing and a set of concerned advice from Miao Miao, the two hung up. It wasn’t until then that Miao Miao realized that she hadn’t lost the article from the previous day and how Jia Yuan was there. Jia Yuan said that she stopped by immediately to save the day. The two joked awhile more before settling down again.
At the charity event, Dong Han and Zi Yan accompanied Yong Mei and kept caution at all times. It seemed to go quite well until Chen Jie showed up and said that he wasn’t going to leave her alone to fend, considering how they were a team. Zi Yan said that Dong Han was also part of their team. Chen Jie didn’t seem to think so. He was back with keeping an eye on Dong Han.
Yet Yong Mei had other plans. She took Dong Han upstairs to a more quiet location to talk. She asked him if he thought it was senseless. She admitted that it was senseless too yet she still wanted to come. He asked her why. He quickly retaliated and said it was all right that she didn’t want to say it. It was better off that they returned home anyway. Yet she smiled and turned to face him. She said that it was because of him. He asked her what she meant. She pulled his earpiece out and said she didn’t want anyone to disturb them. And then just like that Zi Yan was searching for them both and asking where Dong Han was. Even Chen Jie and Ah Gang were on the search for them. (Nice, it gave Chen Jie a chance to nab at Dong Han.) Now it was Chen Jie’s turn to call out for Dong Han, telling him to answer. Then they separated again to go in different directions and continue the search. And then it was back to the conversation with Dong Han and Yong Mei again. Or more like it was Yong Mei still talking and Dong Han looked like he was weighing his options. Anyway, Yong Mei was saying how she’d fallen in love in the past, but ended up getting hurt because that person didn’t love her, only her background. She continued by saying that she’d promised herself that if she were to fall in love again, she would choose for herself. She then checked in with Dong Han, and asked if he understood. He said he hoped he had misunderstood. She said he didn’t, because the person she was referring to was him. She said that she hoped he didn’t mind her straightforward personality, and he said he didn’t mind. She interrupted by saying it was all right that he didn’t like her since they could start all over again at zero. He asked her if it was because he’d saved her. She said it wasn’t. He finished his sentence by saying that was just his duty. She said what she saw was his bravery. Then when he comforted her that one time regarding the newspaper, she saw his gentleness. He said he wasn’t that good of a person like she made him out to be. She said that time will tell. He finally had to cut her off by saying that it was against his duties. She said she could wait until after his mission was finished. He said that he would leave immediately afterward. She said it couldn’t be too far. She said that she won’t force him into giving her a chance yet she would work harder to convince him. He still didn’t say anything, so she thought it was good enough, considering how he didn’t outright say no. And that was also when Zi Yan arrived at the scene, seeing them so close. Well, they were standing close, not being intimate or anything. Yong Mei, hearing Zi Yan’s footsteps, turned around and apologized for going off like that. She said that she just needed some fresh air. That was also when Dong Han turned around, looking guiltily at Zi Yan. Zi Yan’s only reaction was pointing toward her own earpiece, indicating that Dong Han wasn’t wearing his. Dong Han wasn’t the one adjusting his earpiece back in but it was Yong Mei doing the deed, which caused another reaction from Zi Yan. That reaction was shocked beyond words, because Dong Han didn’t bother stopping Yong Mei or stepping away from her. Yong Mei apologized after that, saying it was her fault so Zi Yan shouldn’t chide him. He walked over to Zi Yan after Yong Mei left, still displaying the guilty look. She didn’t say anything to him, but just turned and left.
Chen Jie was so giving Dong Han an earful, saying how even if Yong Mei didn’t understand or know, Dong Han should know better. Before long, Dong Han told Chen Jie to shut up. (LOL!) Chen Jie asked Dong Han to repeat it. Dong Han told him that someone was carrying a gun. Dong Han went on by saying that they shouldn’t injure the innocents so it was better to lure the other person outside. Chen Jie asked how. Dong Han said that Chen Jie, Ah Gang, and Zi Yan should escort Yong Mei out so the other person would follow. Dong Han said that he would fallback. Chen Jie wanted to stick with Dong Han. Dong Han said what if there were others outside. Chen Jie retorted by saying how would he know if Dong Han wouldn’t shoot him in the back. Dong Han told him to take a gamble. Chen Jie finally made a move while blurting out commands to the others. Zi Yan immediately grabbed Yong Mei and hurried out of there–with the suspect following after. Dong Han used that opportunity to follow him.
While they were making their way out of there, Yong Mei asked about Dong Han. Zi Yan said that Dong Han was following them from behind. Chen Jie turned around and told the other person to stop while Ah Gang and Zi Yan pulled out their guns as well. Zi Yan had used herself to shield in front of Yong Mei at the same time. Chen Jie then yelled out for Ah Gang to restrain the other person. Yet what shocked them all was Chen Jie telling Dong Han to stop and toss his gun on the ground. Dong Han yelled out what Chen Jie was trying to pull while Ah Gang paused in his tracks. Zi Yan even yelled out for Chen Jie, wondering what he was up to. Chen Jie told her to shut up and repeated his order by telling Dong Han to toss his gun. Yong Mei then spoke up to ask Chen Jie about his intention. Chen Jie said he would explain when they returned. He repeated his command once again. Dong Han said if Chen Jie wanted to, just shoot him to get it over with. Chen Jie told Dong Han not to taunt him. Ah Gang told Chen Jie not to be like that at the moment. He still didn’t listen. Ah Gang had no choice but to proceed with his task, telling the suspect to kneel down before kicking his weapon away. Dong Han knew it wasn’t that simple. Ah Gang got overpowered while searching for other weapons. It was also then that Dong Han reacted, striking at the suspect to save Ah Gang. Yet Chen Jie still yelled at Dong Han, telling him not to move. Dong Han told Chen Jie not to shoot, saying that he wanted the suspect alive. So they engaged in a fight. It was too obvious the suspect wasn’t a match for Dong Han. Yet he retreated and pulled out a knife. Dong Han removed his own tie and used that as a weapon. It was effective at first yet the knife had cut Dong Han’s tie in several more moves. Dong Han didn’t give up, finally restraining the suspect. Ah Gang soon rushed forward to take over for Dong Han, telling Dong Han it was all right to let go. Dong Han loosened up at last after Ah Gang attempted to undo Dong Han’s grip from the suspect. While he was handcuffing the suspect, Chen Jie yelled out that it was more important to get Yong Mei home. He yelled at Ah Gang when Ah Gang didn’t respond. Ah Gang yelled back, saying that it was enough already, and that Dong Han could go, considering how they were all on the same team. Chen Jie returned his glare to Dong Han yet Dong walked away to continue his duty while Ah Gang yelled at Chen Jie to help him. Zi Yan finally put away her gun while Yong Mei walked out from behind her to ask about Dong Han’s well being. Dong Han said he was fine and told Zi Yan to get Yong Mei home. While Yong Mei settled into the car, she finally discovered something, yelling out Dong Han’s name. That was when Zi Yan turned around and saw what they had all missed before. Dong Han was injured. Zi Yan rushed over to him and grab onto his sides, telling him to sit down. Dong Han said they could wait until they were done with the mission, but she told him to sit down first. Yet he pushed her away and proceeded to open the car door again. But that was also when he crashed. Both Zi Yan and Yong Mei rushed over to tend to him.
*WARNING*: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you DO NOT want to be spoiled, please DO NOT read. You have been warned.
As it were, they were still following the latest lead with Mr. Shen yet was interrupted by Miao Miao and her using of connections. Yet after her initial urging for the others to investigate and find the truth for themselves of both father and son’s innocence in the involvement with Zhang Guo Tang, she went into a narrative, reflective mode instead of letting them move forward faster.
Luckily, soon, it seemed that Zi Yan and Dong Han were out and about again, carrying out another mission. Their job this time was none other than retrieving the files regarding Zi Hong’s background. They were able to find the files in the Records Room. Dong Han confirmed that Zi Hong’s original name was indeed Lai Song Ting (賴松廷), one of the kids who survived the accident of 20 years ago. After saying a word of appreciation for the two’s effort, Chief Zheng got off the phone and told Miao Miao she was right with her conjectures.
Back in the Interrogation Room, Zi Hong finally revealed more details and through his narration, told Chen Jie (and the others who were standing outside to observe) why and how he’d to protect his father. He said they could arrest him and imprisoned him for all they wanted, but don’t touch his father. He also went on to say that what he’d owed the Shen family, he couldn’t repay in this lifetime. What he regretted, even more, was not being able to call Mrs. Shen “Mom” before she passed away. Yet he also warned the others that one day he would turn this place upside down after he got out. Extreme? No, it was justified. What was WAY over was how Miao Miao kept giving them orders. It was like she was the only one in this world knowing of righteousness so it was in her right to tell them how to execute anything relating to justice.
Anyway, it seemed like someone loved to jump the gun and jumped to conclusions, so the next part actually revealed why Chief Zheng had arrested Mr. Shen. It wasn’t because they were so incapable of not seeing that Mr. Shen was innocent of all conspiracies. (Or most of it.) Dong Han had realized that Chief Zheng didn’t want to release Mr. Shen. It wasn’t because he was still doubtful. Because Ah Gang had verified some details with that one guy who was supposedly Zhang Guo Tang’s henchman in regard to why Mr. Shen went to see him. Mr. Shen wanted that guy to pass on the words of not bothering his boss anymore. What Chief Zheng’s initial plan (before someone used their connections to force them all to take other actions) was to force Jiang Jian Ming to appear. Considering how Jiang Jian Ming kept dodging them and not willing to cooperate but kept telling them to go on to find leads. Yet even after the explanation, Miao Miao still went on in her way with yelling them out, saying cops shouldn’t be that way and that she can’t accept it that Chief Zheng wasn’t releasing the pair of father and son yet. She sounded like she was their boss. (Seriously? If it was any other case, would she care that much? Just because it was involving her friend, she reacted stronger. Did she poke her nose in all of the other cases around town too and exclaim justice? If she did, then I’m sorry for generalizing. I tried to hold back for the last 3 episodes but it was just getting WAY out of hand now.) So Zi Yan had to interfere and explain to her how their chief didn’t have any other way either, and it was indeed hard on him too. Chen Jie even jumped in to vouch that they would release the two after acquiring the information they needed from Jiang Jian Ming. But that didn’t satisfy Miao Miao either, considering how she was already on a roll with being able to control them for so long. Mostly the chief was just heeding to her grandpa’s reputation, seriously. Even her grandpa’s interference wasn’t able to stop her either. (Well, if he was able to stop her way, they wouldn’t be there in the first place.) Now she was giving them the last chance before she would unleash her wrath. (Oooh, getting scary, right? Puh…lease…) And when in the world did she respect them? After all that yelling and she dared to talk about respect? Really? She said she had given them enough respect? Really? When was that?
So after Miao Miao stormed out of there, leaving behind her grandpa to apologize to the others – and even causing Chief Zheng to apologize in return, Chen Jie had to drive her grandpa home. Midway, they found each other and he even encouraged her on. (Seriously? Now I understand why she was able to keep doing those meddling into others’ businesses.) Yet he said that Chief Zheng wasn’t wrong either, because they just had different points of views, and method of execution. (Okay, that sounded a little better, but still.) Her grandpa said he was proud of her, seeing how much she cared for others. (Sorry, only if they were her friends, considering how she hadn’t meddled into every single case in this world.) He also reminded her there were other kids in this world that needed help, not just her friends. (Thank you, I needed that.) Her grandpa also told her to be careful, and not go mess with Zheng Guo Tang’s henchmen. After all that was said and done, Chen Jie still had to drive the old man home. (Seriously? No wonder they couldn’t go solve more cases, they were busy being chauffeur and slaves for some people.)
So the waiting game began since Jiang Jian Ming was still overseas taking care of businesses. Miao Miao was back to her devastating self and was trying to occupy her time at the newspaper place. As for Zi Yan, she was seen guarding the precious princess (or they would all be scolded again). Zi Hong was seen in his cell reading his newspaper. Probably the article Miao Miao published. It was also seen in the background that Zhang Guo Tang had already returned. Yes, the man that everyone had been waiting for. At least one of the major characters.
Then finally the person they’d all been waiting for returned. He actually returned the next day after hearing it, and didn’t even return home yet but had headed right to the police headquarter to see Chief Zheng and the others. Seriously, they were a bunch of stuck ups, all right. It was all right that Jiang Jian Ming was making it hard for Chief Zheng and didn’t even respect him enough to give him some ‘face’ YET expected him to do the same? Wow. Of course, it just made Jiang Jian Ming even more suspicious. Anyway, the little interview went on, Jiang Jian Ming rejected when Chief Zheng offered the presence of a lawyer. So he went on and told them of his background or how he’d crossed path with Zhang Guo Tang. He told them Zhang Guo Tang called him up and demanded money on the second day that the latter returned. On the other hand, while Chen Jie was questioning Jiang Jian Ming, Dong Han was really staring Jiang Jian Ming down. It wasn’t just typical staring to detect lying either. It was like he had a gripe or two with the old man. So when he left, Dong Han contradicted Chen Jie and said that Jiang Jian Ming was still hiding something. It wasn’t like it didn’t make sense. It seemed too good to be true that Zhang Guo Tang was just the crazy one and Jiang Jian Ming was just an innocent victim. (Really?)
The scene in the trailer finally came forth. It was the part where Zhang Guo Tang was talking to someone on the phone. Also one of the much-debated topics of the moment, which was who was the one talking to Zhang Guo Tang aka the person who called him and told him to return to this place? He also said that the other person would be seeking justice while he was after money. Aside from that, Zhang Guo Tang was asking how it had been a while that the other person hadn’t contacted him.
Back at the Shen resident, another confrontation ensued between Mr. Shen and Zi Hong. Mr. Shen wanted Zi Hong to promise him to never do what he did earlier again. He didn’t want Zi Hong to get imprisoned again. He wouldn’t know how to face Zi Hong’s mother. Yet Zi Hong didn’t promise him. Zi Hong said he knew his father was protecting him, not Jiang Jian Ming like he told Zhang Guo Tang’s henchman. After some more words of disagreements, mostly because Zi Hong didn’t want to drop the whole matter, not when he was so close with finding out the truth as to what happened 20 years ago, Zi Hong said he was moving out. He said that he would still come back to visit Mr. Shen. Mr. Shen knew it was to protect him, not wanting Zhang Guo Tang to cause trouble for him if Zi Hong were to go and seek out Zhang Guo Tang. Mr. Shen, after much-failed attempts, resorted to using a stick to disciple Zi Hong. He didn’t want to do it, he just wanted Zi Hong to not go and get himself hurt. The next words that came from Zi Hong were really touching though. He finally revealed what he was thinking all these years and how he had appreciated Mr. Shen and his wife had done for him but knowing it was too late to call Mrs. Shen “Mom”. All that they’d done for him, it seemed like he didn’t deserve it. However, he still wanted to seek out Zhang Guo Tang, but he promised Mr. Shen that he would take good care of himself. He wasn’t sure if he could do it, but he would try. What he wanted Mr. Shen to promise him was to take good care of himself.
When he stepped outside, he found Miao Miao there. She had been listening to their conversation and didn’t want to interfere. She almost didn’t want to talk to him either, not sure what to say, so she fled. Yet she turned around again. She apologized for not being able to help him when he and his father was arrested the previous day. However, she launched right into asking him about him being Qing Ting. She told him she discovered his identity already when she went with Jia Yuan to look for him. She went on and on with how she had asked Xuan Xuan regarding the song. She was sure trying to make light of the situation while he was just staying silent. (I’m not picking on her here. I know she was just trying to reconnect with her childhood friend.) Was Zi Hong trying to debate whether he should reveal himself? Well, it was already too obvious. Yet was he weighing the situation to see if he should acknowledge her? Considering how he had to go and confront Zhang Guo Tang later. She finally told Zi Hong to speak up, not letting her worry anymore. He indeed did, but he asked her to pretend that she hadn’t seen or heard what happened earlier. He also told her that it was the first time his father beat him like that, so she shouldn’t misunderstand. She asked him why he got hit like that, and he reminded her that he just asked her to forget about the incident. She apologized and soon asked about his mother. It turned intense again when she asked him if he could take her to see his mother one of these days. He said it was better that they kept their distance. She knew he wanted to go and seek revenge on Zhang Guo Tang. She asked him if he went, what about his mother? He tried to aggravate her by saying her investigations were just for some paper and was causing people even more trouble than she thought. Yet she was determined to continue with her investigation. Zi Hong asked if she was a cop, lol. He was definitely aggravating her on purpose, trying to chase her away with his words, not wanting her to be in danger. He went on and told her not to keep being so dramatic and saying all those nonsense about ‘brothers and sisters’, telling her to stop meddling into his matter, and that there was no longer any “Qing Ting”. She wanted to ask him one last thing, which was regarding the wooden tags on the tree. She pondered if it was he who placed those wooden tags on there. He said he didn’t know what she was talking about. She apologized and left at last. He pretended that he didn’t care, but he turned to look at her when she was walking away.
That night, Mr. Shen and Zi Hong went to Jiang Jian Ming’s house to apologize for their behaviors that had caused complications for Jiang Jian Ming. However, Jiang Jian Ming didn’t blame the two. Although, he told the two not to repeat it again. He told Mr. Shen that Zhang Guo Tang wouldn’t be listening to Mr. Shen or stop just because. Moreover, he told Zi Hong not to be so rash anymore, even if he was worried about his father. Jiang Jian Ming soon disclosed that Zi Hong should thank Miao Miao because Miao Miao was the one who had tried to persuade Chief Zheng all the while yet wasn’t able to get through Chief Zheng. He told Zi Hong that Miao Miao finally sought out his granddaughter hence his daughter finally calling him to tell him regarding the matter. It was also through that call that he realized what was going on so he returned faster than expected. So Zi Hong regretted his decision? Would he seek out Miao Miao now that he found out the truth? Or would he continue to be cruel so he could protect her from harm?
Indeed Zi Hong went to seek out Miao Miao at the newspaper place after the meeting with Jiang Jiang Ming. He tried to open the door but couldn’t. He walked to the other side to see the wooden tags Miao Miao was talking about on her computer screen through the glass door. He ended up going to his car and calling her on the phone. Yet she didn’t care to answer. She had every right to be upset, considering what she’d gone through to help him and had been given the cold shoulders. But she got up in the end. It was too late though, Zi Hong already left.
The next day, while Ah Gang was out with another officer to keep a lookout at the shop where one of Zhang Guo Tang’s henchmen was, the others were at the secret headquarter in a meeting. Xiao He was able to track Zhang Guo Tang’s phone number through the call he made on March 31st to Jiang Jian Ming. The area was the same as the place where Zi Yan had discovered those two kidnappers that one time. But because he had used a fake name to sign up, Xiao He wasn’t able to track any further. Once again, they ran into a dead end so Chen Jie’s disappointed sigh was justified. Zi Yan was pondering how Zhang Guo Tang’s actions were always faster than them. While they were discussing all that though, they had no idea that Zhang Guo Tang had already made contact with the person at the shop, through another one of his henchmen. Zhang Guo Tang set the meetup place at a supermarket. Nice? Ah Gang was able to follow that one guy to the spot.
Meanwhile, the others had left the control room and went back to the main area to discuss the case further. Chen Jie was saying how it would make sense that Zhang Guo Tang would contact Jiang Jian Ming the second or third time to ask him if he wanted to send out the money or not. Dong Han said that proved that Jiang Jian Ming didn’t receive just one call from Zhang Guo Tang. Zi Yan said that unless he had already given Zhang Guo Tang the money. Chen Jie then said regardless, he still lied. Xiao He was wondering why Jiang Jian Ming was lying. Dong Han jumped in again to say that he must be hiding something from them, something big like how Zhang Guo Tang had already had a hold on him about it. (Blackmail?)
So back at the supermarket, Zhang Guo Tang was having a soapy meet up with his buddy. (Yeah, right.) He was just reminiscing about the old days. He understood that the other guy had already left and had started anew with a simple life. He said he wanted to do a last thing for them, wanting to fulfill one of their old dreams. So after some side talk, the other guy went ahead and informed Zhang Guo Tang of what was going on, and how the cops were investigating him. He told the other guy not to worry since he was also investigating them. He disclosed that someone within the group was on his side. Already obvious from previous words exchanged on the phone, but now it narrowed down to the special team. After the exchange, Zhang Guo Tang left and Ah Gang tried hard not to get discovered.
Dong Han briefed them a bit about the situation with Jiang Jian Ming and Zhang Guo Tang years back. He suggested that they revisit the case regarding the accident of 20 years ago to understand more about the situation. He wanted to go in a different direction, considering how they were in a tight spot at the moment–with no lead and all. Chen Jie rejected the idea and said their boss wanted to keep things secret for now. He also said that they should be tracking down Zhang Guo Tang. Dong Han said he could investigate on his own time then. Yet Chen Jie told Dong Han that he already disregarded it. He went all out with saying that he could send Dong Han out to do other missions or he could let Dong Han swap with Ah Gang or let him go with Ah Gang to monitor the store. Then he said that Yong Mei needed someone to escort her later, and he initially wanted to let Zi Yan go with her but he could send Dong Han out as well. Yes, someone was definitely exuding his leader attitude. In a way, they should focus and be a team, I agree. But on the other hand, I couldn’t shake it that he was seriously suspicious. Or he needed to prove he was their leader? No idea. But he ended up dragging Xiao He in too. Then he said he wanted Dong Han to understand the situation and the target was Zhang Guo Tang, but Dong Han pointed out that his target was also Zhang Guo Tang. Chen Jie had to pull the “This is an order” card yet Dong Han said what if his order was wrong. (LOL!) Chen Jie got so mad that he got up from his seat and did a face-off with Dong Han. What now?
