I just saw the headline yesterday when I was doing a fast scroll on Facebook before heading to bed. However, this got me. I thought, in my half-asleep state, my eyes were playing a trick on me. Then when I scrolled back up to read, I read it more slowly yet still didn’t believe. I doubted my reading skills. After clicking into the article, I forced myself to look up each word or phrase carefully, because I’m still learning. Yet after a thorough reading, it was indeed true.
According to this article, Rabbit Yang attempted suicide but was discovered by her cohabitant boyfriend, Zhang Ting Hu. Despite having discovered her in time and getting her the help needed yet she still passed away tragically after twelve days. Her last wish was to donate her organs. Zhang Ting Hu was by her side all the while she was going through her last moments. (ETtoday published four more articles on their page back to back to talk about Rabbit Yang and her career and more.)
Just recently, I saw an article about them dating and how the media had used the phrase “too immersed in their roles” (入戲太深) jokingly for their situation. Yes, after The New World (新世界), they had grown closer. However, I wasn’t really paying attention yet I thought it was cute. I was looking forward to seeing new developments regarding them too. However, we would never get to witness anything blossoming between them anymore. They had only dated for such a short time. Zhang Ting Hu, of course, had been devastated. Hopefully, he will get past this pain–with the support and love from others around him. Both of them are still so young yet having to face this tragedy.
Not to make this post about me again, but if anyone’s calling me out for shedding crocodile tears, I already explained in the other post, and that I was annoyed with the characters, not the actors and actresses themselves. I adored the cast and crew of the drama so much while watching The New World that it had become a set of bittersweet memories so it was indeed shocking and devastating to learn of the news.
How was it for me? I felt like I wasted the last fifteen weeks for nothing. I’m not saying that it’s bad. But I’m saying that there are several factors that have ruined it. The ending is always the most important part to convince us so I think it has to be really, really strong. It’s hard to do and it can’t all be perfect to everyone’s satisfaction, but it has to at least make sense. In some areas, it did make sense. But in others, I just felt so infuriated that it was like all was wasted.
First off, they have a great team with the special team. Why not focus more on it?
Instead, we were forced to watch Zi Hong and Miao Miao’s constant banter and their on and off relationship. Okay, I got it that they were the main couple, but it was too overused with their fights and then later they were so inactive in the final moments of the series that they could be easily forgotten if they weren’t needed to persuade Dong Han and Zi Yan to let go. Their moments were mostly episode fillers so we could wait for more developments of the main plot to unveil itself.
What was the most infuriating thing about the ending? Yang Yong Zhao got away. Seriously? He was the mastermind of the Returning Home Project, and I swear, I always thought that the mastermind was the guiltiest one. Even if Dong Han and Zi Yan carried out the later parts of the plan, they were misled by him to hate and to continue on. How could he get the free ticket out just because he was Chief Zheng’s senior and because he was Miao Miao’s grandfather? I don’t care how old he was, he was still guilty. If the others were going down, he had to go down as well. To think that Miao Miao was soooo into finding her childhood friends and in trying to protect people closer to her, I felt it strange that she accepted that Zi Yan went to prison and her grandfather didn’t. Not to mention how she fought so much with the police just because Zi Hong was in confinement twice in the past yet didn’t do anything for Zi Yan? Okay, so I got it that priorities with her and some others in here were seriously messed up. But what about Chen Jie? Chen Jie letting it go as well was somewhat unbelievable for me. Seriously? I know Chen Jie had calmed down since his last aggression with targeting Dong Han the first few episodes while trying to figure out who the mole was. Yet I don’t think that he would be the type to let it go so easily and telling Ah Gang and Xiao He so lightly that their boss told them to forget about it. He put his own brother in prison! How could he let a little connection get in the way? Just because Yang Yong Zhao was their advisor and was one of the most respectable cops in the good old days? To think that Chief Zheng was so strongly vouching to seek out the truth and do what was right, he sure took the cowardly path and brushed things under the rugs once again, like some people in here. I was really disappointed in him.
Yong Mei’s sole existence was for others to protect her. Then it changed to how she got a bigger role in the turn of events because she was carrying Dong Han’s baby. That meant she was the one responsible for breaking the whole hatred cycle between all parties, at last, uniting some families together. Aside from that, I swear I couldn’t even sympathize with her or anything. I’m not trying to pick on her, but the plot had led me to think so. The point that her pregnancy didn’t make sense made it less convincing too. I got why the writers wanted it to go that way since I already stated above with how it brought the families together. But it didn’t make sense. Dong Han was avoiding her like the plague previously. If it was the hospital scene, it was too unconvincing. I don’t even think he was well enough to do anything. (Sorry, but the writers led us there–like Percy had pointed out to me, so I don’t feel bad for going “there.”) If it was after they got out of the hospital, then I would understand. I think there were some scenes that got cut, but it was in one of the BTS regarding Dong Han and Yong Mei’s scenes. That might have explained it. Yet what was the point of making Yong Mei involved with Dong Han aside from just making peace with the other side? Even if Dong Han was revenge-driven and had gone insane with his tactic, and went into a killing spree, but we–as the audience–couldn’t help but feel really bad for him since he lost his whole family after all. Making him betray Zi Yan was the worst.
Who did Dong Han love–Zi Yan or Yong Mei? Many had asked this question on The New World Facebook page. Pan Bo Xi had posted a picture of Dong Han and Zi Yan as the final moments of the drama were airing. When he was asked, he had said whichever picture he posted, that was the answer. (Go here.) During the flashback of their face-off scene, Dong Han had told Zi Yan that their relationship had never changed. That was the obvious answer. Even if he had cared enough for Yong Mei, but with his words, it was mostly because of the baby (and possibly guilt from using her).
What was the point of surrounding the events on Zhang Guo Tang since the beginning and making a mountain out of it all? I swear it was another wasted route. Well, they wanted to create suspense and lead us astray, but after we found out it was only an accident, it seemed like Zhang Guo Tang’s existence was just there to fill time. Yet I felt if he was the final bad guy, it would have cranked up the hype even more. Because seriously? Although lots of things had happened after Zhang Guo Tang died, it seemed to be recycled and anti-climatic, to say the least. Like how Zi Hong already found out that Zhang Guo Tang said it being an accident. Yet they rehashed that again AND he (Zi Hong) didn’t just say it out to the others and try to convince from there? Yeah, Dong Han and Yang Yong Zhao were going wacko already so there was no talking to them. But I felt the last bits–even with the plot finally revealing Zi Yan as Xiao Cao, the details rehashed again. It was like, hello, we already know that. Could someone show some more proofs instead of crying out the innocent card and saying it was an accident? Yeah, I understand it was an accident because things didn’t turn out the way they thought it would so that was why it was called an accident. I got it. But I hated that they kept crying out their innocence when it was obvious nothing would come out good with the location along with the weather condition of that day. They wouldn’t know for sure if it would rain. But the curve and all? Just a little maneuver and an accident could occur. I don’t care how much they regretted it. And it didn’t matter if Project Jing Hai wasn’t what the others thought it to be. It was just a bunch of excuses to shrug off responsibilities. If they had said: “We tried, but we messed up”, it was easier to swallow. Instead, it was about “We’re innocent, we didn’t know that would happen” type of thing. The other reason for making Zhang Guo Tang the main villain works better? I seriously think he was the other person, aside from Dong Han, who actually helped move the plot forward. Or we would all be in a limbo of forever going through Zi Hong and Miao Miao’s banter and makeup scenes.
Jia Yuan’s death was really for nothing. Seriously? This was the other reason why I hated the ending. Or more like how Yang Yong Zhao got away with it. Although Jia Yuan sacrificed herself because she didn’t want to be used as a pawn for Zhang Guo Tang to put pressure on Zi Hong, it all had to do with Yang Yong Zhao’s grand plan. He was the one who called Zhang Guo Tang and got Zhang Guo Tang to come back. He couldn’t predict Zhang Guo Tang’s moves or didn’t care. He only wanted to execute his plan, so when it went haywire and Zhang Guo Tang was on the loose, running his own agenda, other people got hurt. One of the most innocent people in this matter was Jia Yuan. Her luck was seriously terrible. Her father incurred so much debt that she had to deal with it and even had to resort to being a call girl to pay off the debts, which she had borrowed from Hua Jie’s place to pay off the other ones first before getting rid of this one. She had to protect her brother so that was the only way for her, or at least she thought of it as that way. She didn’t paint herself as the victim or the pitiful one yet was pitied by others, including the audience. She said many times, especially to Zi Hong and later to Jiang Jian Ming, that she wanted to solve her problems her own way. She didn’t cling to anyone for help–or didn’t want to if it wasn’t necessary. She was also very brave, having endured so much already and having to protect her brother (as said before). In the end, what happened? Although it was her choice to sacrifice, I felt like her final moments were just a little crying from some parties and then that was it. She was forgotten away, it seemed like no one cared to seek justice for her anymore. They had other things to do, so they just wanted to brush her off. I’m not saying once a close one dies, we have to always be morbid. We still have to move on with our lives, but I felt Jia Yuan’s death was like it just happened and forgotten so quickly. Things happening made it hard to just focus on mourning for her, but I had a feeling like even Zi Hong no longer cared. That suck. Her brother didn’t know so it wouldn’t count. But I would expect more than five to ten minutes of crying.
Was it Zi Hong’s mother’s fault that the accident of twenty years ago happened? Well, I’m not trying to blame the poor old woman here, but Zi Hong said it himself in episode 15 that it could be an accident or not, because of how he and his mother might be the target of the “warning.” It might as well be so, but those other two families were seriously unlucky. Moral of the story: Stay away from married men! I don’t care how talented they are or like how it seemed that their married life didn’t look too happy or whatever else. They chose it. Don’t justify their actions or yours if you wanted to step toward that path. (And this was the other reason why I hated that Dong Han’s story sort of sounded like Jiang Jian Ming’s too. Not married but it made it similar to the triangle and all. I don’t care if Yong Mei threw herself in front of him, he could say “no” or stop her. So yeah, I’m not going to blame her only just because of my biases, I’m blaming his lack of self-control too.)
Who were the true heroes? Many might think I’m crazy by now. I did not put them in just because they’re my favorite couple. However, I think that if they hadn’t done what they did–minus Dong Han going on a crazy killing spree, no one would know. Everything regarding the accident and the other matters kept getting brushed under the rug. If they hadn’t created some commotion, the others would just plain continue to carry on with their lives, thinking they did right. Even if two wrong doesn’t make a right or whatever it is often splashed around, in this case, they got through. Even if it was because Yong Mei’s connection that forced her father to take some actions, it was still something. Then talking about them, it brought up another sense of frustration upon me again, because of how Yang Yong Zhao had involved both Dong Han and Zi Yan into the plot but never included Zi Hong or Miao Miao. Well, not until recently, but that had failed. Of course, it was already obvious that he wanted to keep Miao Miao out of it–as he had said before. Yet it meant that he was all right with using Dong Han and Zi Yan as tools to forgo his plans. His pitiful talks indicated that he cared for them, but to me, it seemed so fake. And obviously, Miao Miao was his granddaughter, so how could she be involved, right?
If the series is cut back to eight episodes, I think it would be a lot better and more enduring, even with the current ending–more or less. Just cut out some unnecessary bantering and some rehashed of information. I didn’t need fifteen episodes to tell me it was all because of some stupid misunderstanding. Lives were lost, people were hurt. How could the ones who were victims end up paying for it while the others who had–even if unintentionally–caused the pain lived so freely? (It didn’t count that Mrs. Jiang finally confessed, it was too late.) I didn’t even know why there were some details that were added if the Jiang weren’t that guilty about the whole matter, like how they paid Zhang Guo Tang off and didn’t tell Chief Zheng or the other police officers about it. Well, Zhang Guo Tang was crazy, but the constant hiding stuff from the others made it harder for them to move forward with their investigation or knowing what to expect.
And lastly, I don’t know why I need to justify myself anymore. But I guess I will have to do it or I’ll be facing a lot of wraths (even if invisible). I will say that I pick on characters in here throughout my review/summaries, but it’s seriously directed at the characters and plot, NOT the actors and actresses themselves. I think they’re a wonderful team. Watching BTS has made the audience understand more about them, but had also made me like them even more. Angela Lee’s actually really cute off-screen, it’s just that she has the weepy, weakling character throughout. Then there’s Rabbit Yang and Zheng Ting Hu’s hilarious rehearsals behind the scenes. The rest of the cast was equally funny, especially Zhao Jie (Chen Jie, lol), who was seen up to no good at times when they were practicing or just waiting for a scene change. Jean Lee was quite pro, slipping in and out of characters so fast that it had amazed some of the people working with her. Pan Bo Xi and Dou Hua Mei, no need to say more, but they were really funny–and cute.
*WARNING*: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you DO NOT want to be spoiled, please DO NOT read. You have been warned.
So after Chen Jie disclosed of Dong Han and Zi Yan’s relationship–or so he had guessed from all their interactions in the past, Yong Mei kept a closer eye on Zi Yan after Chen Jie delivered the tray of juices and cookies for her.
While that was going on, Zi Hong and Miao Miao returned to the forest to check it out, like they had talked about the previous day. They found out that the wooden tags were all gone, including Xiao Cao’s. It didn’t get dropped on the ground or anything like that. At least there wasn’t a trace of it. As Miao Miao was pondering about it, Zi Hong was forced to remember back to the poem that Grandpa Yang had recited in his letter to Miao Miao, and then also the poem that Xiao Cao had sent to Dong Han as a note previously. When Miao Miao asked, Zi Hong presented a possible case, stating that the person who came back to get the rest of the wooden tags wasn’t Xi Shuai but Xiao Cao.
On the other hand, Yang Yong Zhao finally made his move. Wearing an over-sized coat helped. Because he was able to conceal explosives inside the coat and managed to plant it on one of the locations. Then Xiao He finally managed to track down Dong Han’s mother. Or more like some other police officers had tracked her down and she said she’d been visiting friends these past few days. However, when Xiao He tracked her cell phone signals, it showed that she was at another location. The strangest thing was how she was at Yang Yong Zhao’s place.
Then it was back to Zi Hong and Miao Miao. Miao Miao was wondering why her grandpa’s letter and Xiao Cao’s note were from the same poet. Zi Hong pointed out that Dong Han and Grandpa Yang’s goals didn’t just include setting off an explosion to send a message. Miao Miao knew Zi Hong meant Jiang Jian Ming was the target yet she pointed out that the security was high at this point so it would be impossible for anyone to go near the place, even if it was Dong Han. Zi Hong said what if there was someone else at the Luo resident that was part of the plan. Miao Miao asked, “It’s her?” Who was she thinking about?
While they were waiting for new development (or whatever it was), Chief Zheng was thinking about what they’d learned so far with Yang Yong Zhao. He couldn’t believe it that Yang Yong Zhao had anything with this madness–or if he could figure it out. Yet he had some suspicions. It was too much of a coincidence. So belong long, he told Ah Gang to go find Yang Yong Zhao before calling Xiao He up. As that was going on, Dong Han was seen somewhere setting up a laptop. Was he getting ready for the final move?
Yong Mei finally approached Zi Yan to talk instead of spying on her from afar. Or more like, Zi Yan had spotted her minutes ago so she couldn’t hide anymore. Yong Mei’s first words to Zi Yan were asking Zi Yan why Zi Yan didn’t tell her that Zi Yan also liked Dong Han. Yong Mei actually apologized for not knowing, because she only focused on herself. Zi Yan asked Yong Mei why she was talking about that at such a time. Yong Mei recounted what Chen Jie told her, regarding how he wanted to drink Zi Yan and Dong Han’s ‘happy wine.’ Since Zi Yan didn’t say anything, Yong Mei continued on by asking if Dong Han also liked Zi Yan. Zi Yan didn’t say anything either so Yong Mei asked if Zi Yan could tell her. Zi Yan told her not to ask. Yong Mei insisted, saying she wanted to know. Yong Mei said perhaps Zi Yan had misunderstood. Zi Yan asked Yong Mei what she meant. Yong Mei said maybe Dong Han didn’t like Zi Yan yet Zi Yan had misunderstood. Zi Yan told Yong Mei not to say those hurtful words. Yong Mei yelled out that Zi Yan was hurting her by not telling her. (Really?) Then Yong Mei apologized, saying that she was the one who hurt Zi Yan. She said she initially thought that she could start over with Dong Han since she was carrying his baby. She never meant to hurt anyone, but just wanted to love someone. Yong Mei persisted again, asking why Zi Yan didn’t tell her earlier. Zi Yan finally spoke up, saying it was because she couldn’t say it out. When Yong Mei asked why, Zi Yan repeated her previous statement, telling Yong Mei not to ask because it was a secret. She said that there were things that could never be explained yet there were also things that could be explained within the next second. Yet she said Yong Mei could be reassured because Dong Han liked her. When Yong Mei asked Zi Yan how she had known, Zi Yan only stepped forward a little and leaned in, whispering, “Secret.” Then she left.
The turn of events finally happened. Zi Yan was told to rest while Chen Jie already had Xiao Ling there to help him. After nodding and smiling, Zi Yan quickly knocked both Chen Jie and Xiao Ling out. Before that though, Zi Hong and Miao Miao already put together that Zi Yan was Xiao Cao. Chief Zheng was talking to Xiao He as well with pulling Zi Yan’s file and her original identity. The question now is, could they stop her? After knocking both parties out, Zi Yan told Chen Jie not to go upstairs or he would incur bad luck. Chen Jie asked why it was her. As Zi Yan was heading upstairs, the flashback of Dong Han and her told the truth of what actually happened during their face-off. After Dong Han asked her, “So?”, she actually lowered her weapon and tossed him something. It was the wooden tag he carved with the symbol of a 4-clover leaf. She clarified that Teacher Yang didn’t just seek him out for the Returning Home Project, but had also sought her out. Dong Han asked her why Yang Yong Zhao didn’t tell him. She said she just found out about his identity the previous day. Dong Han then said that Teacher Yang had told him that there was someone else that was posing near Jiang Jian Ming. Zi Yan said it was her. When Zi Yan told him about their childhood and how he’d made pinwheels for them, his was yellow and hers was green, he finally lowered his gun. That was also when she walked over to him and hugged him–and he hugged her back. After a while, she pulled away and told him that there wasn’t much time left. Yet she had to ask one last thing, which was if he liked Yong Mei. She told him not to lie to her, and that she knew about Yong Mei’s pregnancy already. He said that previously, he thought he didn’t like Yong Mei at all yet after learning of her pregnancy he didn’t know anymore. When she asked about them, he said it hadn’t changed so she didn’t need to ask. Then he turned away, asking where Ah Zhi was. (Ah Zhi was the officer accompanying her that morning.) She looked at him a while before saying that he didn’t need to look anymore since she was going to send him off. She quickly drew her gun and shot herself in the arm. So she shot herself, not Dong Han. (If anyone watched episode 14’s BTS though, they would know.) Upon hearing the gunshot, Dong Han was beyond shocked, rushing over to her, asking what she was doing, trying to put pressure on her wound to stop the bleeding. She told him to leave yet he didn’t, he was still mad worried. She had to yell at him before he got up reluctantly to leave. But he turned one last time to look at her before finally leaving at last.
Back to the present, things were definitely moving fast now. Zi Yan was entering Jiang Jian Ming and his wife’s room. That was why she told Chen Jie not to go upstairs earlier. She told them of her original name before pointing a gun at them. They were soon tied up while Chen Jie and the others tried to do some damage control downstairs. Zi Yan used her cell phone to set up and it was connected to Dong Han. She told the other two in the room that they were being recorded and it was live. She advised them to tell the truth and she wouldn’t hurt them. She pointed the gun on them again, wanting them to follow Dong Han’s previous requests. Jiang Jian Ming asked if Zi Yan was nuts. (Seriously?) So elsewhere, Chief Zheng was calling Zi Hong and asking for his and Miao Miao’s help regarding Zi Yan. After much pressure from Zi Yan, Mrs. Jiang finally spoke up, admitting that she was the one who called Zhang Guo Tang yet she said she didn’t mean to hurt them. (Again, really?) It was like what Zhang Guo Tang said, Mrs. Jiang wanted to give some pressures toward the three families who didn’t want to move yet it turned into a disaster with the accident and all. Zi Yan didn’t believe it, considering the deaths and casualties. Zi Yan was indeed going crazy now, not far behind from Dong Han’s, forcing Mrs. Jiang to admit of hers and her husband’s doings. Jiang Jian Ming spoke up again, trying to get to Zi Yan, saying that he didn’t know about the matter until afterward and how his wife had regretted her actions since then hence moving to the U.S. until now because she couldn’t forgive herself. Jiang Jian Ming told Zi Yan to pull the trigger if she still didn’t believe his words because he already said all that needed to be said. Zi Yan couldn’t do it after much hesitation, breaking down completely. Outside, Miao Miao finally brushed off her tears and decided to enter. Chen Jie had given his ‘okay’, so Zi Hong knocked, trying to connect to Zi Yan by calling her “Xiao Cao”. They were able to enter the room. Miao Miao walked over to Zi Yan and they hugged. Zi Yan confessed that she really missed them both, always wanting to call their names when they met up in the present time yet she couldn’t. After much rambling, Zi Yan finally pulled away and told the others that Jiang Jian Ming and his wife admitted their doings already. Miao Miao stopped her and told her not to continue on that path anymore. Zi Hong spoke up to clarify the matter, saying that it was unbelievable yet he had already asked Zhang Guo Tang and his answer was the same. (Can we please find some other more credible sources on this?) That got Zi Yan riled up again, saying how could it be just an accident. Zi Hong said it was all right since he would prove it to her. He approached Mrs. Jiang at that time, asking her if she knew who he was. Mrs. Jiang diverted her eyes away from Zi Hong when he asked if there was some other reason aside from calling Zhang Guo Tang to scare the families who didn’t want to move. It wasn’t just because she was currently in fear of them, but because she was hiding something. Zi Hong said it out anyway, asking her if she meant for Zhang Guo Tang to send a message to his mother. Zi Hong said that he couldn’t forgive her yet he knew his mother had already forgiven her. Zi Yan jumped in then, asking Zi Hong what he meant. He then explained about the music box. Zi Hong’s conclusion was that that ‘accident’ could just be an accident or not because the target could just be him and his mother.
While that was going on, Chief Zheng finally found Yang Yong Zhao and had a talk with him. Chief Zheng had directed for the others to leave already. Chief Zheng said he wanted to do some betting with Yang Yong Zhao. Yang Yong Zhao asked why Chief Zheng was picking such a time to play around. Chief Zheng said that he believed Yang Yong Zhao wouldn’t let the plan carry through, i.e. the upcoming explosion. Yang Yong Zhao had to drop the front since Chief Zheng already put two and two together. Chief Zheng said that when he put together the special team, Dong Han and Zi Yan were recommended by Yang Yong Zhao. He had believed Yang Yong Zhao so much that he didn’t think otherwise. Chief Zheng reminded Yang Yong Zhao of his previous philosophy about not hurting others if one didn’t have to. He told Yang Yong Zhao to give up. Chief Zheng said that Zi Yan had already let go and that Zi Hong and Miao Miao were accompanying her. Chief Zheng also said that he could tell Chen Jie to let them go. Then the three of them could go look for Dong Han. Chief Zheng pointed out Yang Yong Zhao had wasted 20 years to set up this plan yet had caused many tragedies, because of the truth that he wanted. Chief Zheng went on to say perhaps the real monster wasn’t Jiang Jian Ming but was someone else. Project Jing Hai wasn’t what they thought it was nor was the so-called “truth” they were seeking. Yang Yong Zhao was still upset, obviously. He thought it through already but couldn’t accept it. Chief Zheng won since Yang Yong Zhao couldn’t carry through. He told Chief Zheng to arrest him at last. Yet Chief Zheng smiled, saying that he didn’t carry handcuffs. He also pointed out that if Yang Yong Zhao didn’t say anything, no one would know anyway. (What? So he gets the free ticket out?) Soon, Zi Yan called Yang Yong Zhao, telling him that she’d failed since the other two didn’t admit their doings. Yang Yong Zhao told her not to worry about it since it was more important that she found a way out. He told her that he also failed, that he’d let her and Dong Han down since he wasn’t able to carry through. Zi Yan told him that she and Dong Han knew already, and that the Returning Home Project had already started, and that she and Dong Han wanted to go find the truth home. Upon hearing that, Yang Yong Zhao was shocked, real shock this time. He asked her what she meant yet she said she wasn’t going to say before hanging up. Sensing the change in the wind, Chief Zheng asked Yang Yong Zhao what was going on after he hung up.
On the other hand, Zi Yan turned on her serious expression again after hanging up. She said that Zi Hong and Miao Miao were right yet she and Dong Han couldn’t let go. So she went to the door and told Chen Jie to disperse all police officers out of sight or she would kill the Jiang couple. Chen Jie shouted that she was also a cop yet she said she wished it was so, but she wasn’t anymore. Chen Jie had no choice but to do as told, telling all officers to clear out. Before entering his car, Chen Jie had turned to look at Zi Yan – who was upstairs monitoring their actions. When she was sure everyone had cleared out, she went back into the room, asking to borrow Zi Hong and Miao Miao’s car. Miao Miao wanted to know what Zi Yan meant earlier when she said “truth home” yet Zi Yan told her not to ask before turning to Zi Hong for the car key. She thanked Zi Hong before telling them to call Chen Jie after her departure and tell Chen Jie not to follow or Jiang Jian Ming would be in danger. Mrs. Jiang begged Zi Yan not to hurt Jiang Jian Ming. Zi Yan said that if she wanted to hurt anyone, Mrs. Jiang wouldn’t have a chance to beg her. Then she ordered Jiang Jian Ming to get up. She turned to Zi Hong and Miao Miao again, saying it was hard to talk each time they met since she didn’t have any time so she could only say a few words. Then she left with Jiang Jian Ming. After Zi Yan hauled Jiang Jiang Ming away, Zi Hong hesitated for quite a time before untying Mrs. Jiang. After a while, Mrs. Jiang said she wanted to apologize to Zi Hong for twenty years already.
Meanwhile, Zi Yan finally stopped along the way and hauled Jiang Jian Ming out. He kept insisting on the whole ‘innocent’ card. Jiang Jian Ming asked Zi Yan if she wanted to kill him. He only admitted his fault where Zi Hong and his mother were concerned. Zi Yan let Jiang Jian Ming go. Yet it wasn’t really letting him go. (He had better start walking, lol.) And back at the Luo resident, Zi Hong and Miao Miao were still trying to decipher Zi Yan’s words.
Zi Yan and Dong Han finally met up again. While they were walking toward one another, flashbacks showed what happened years ago when Yang Yong Zhao first approached them and wanted to recruit them for the plan. There was another part of the conversation between Zi Yan and Dong Han during their face-off scene that wasn’t revealed yet. It was about how Yang Yong Zhao kept their identities secret from one another to protect them. Then back to the present scene, they finally hugged. Zi Yan said that she wanted to go look for him three years ago yet Teacher Yang told her to send that note to him. Dong Han said he understood. And then elsewhere, Chen Jie was driving Zi Hong and Miao Miao at this point, still trying to figure out the puzzle. Chen Jie wanted to know if there was a way to persuade Dong Han and Zi Yan.
So the crucial moment had arrived. Zi Yan and Dong Han were both ready. They finally activated the bomb, which was somewhere below the bridge. Yes, that was their plan. It was no longer Yang Yong Zhao’s fight, considering how he had backed out on them. Zi Hong, Miao Miao, and Chen Jie also arrived on time. Before heading off with Miao Miao, Zi Hong told Chen Jie to stay away. Upon seeing Zi Hong and Miao Miao, Dong Han yelled out, warning them not to come any closer. However, typical them, they didn’t listen. When they were much closer, Zi Hong took another step to be where Zi Yan and Dong Han were and placed his hand on theirs before turning to Miao Miao. She walked over and did the same. She also declared that they were finally reunited. Zi Hong asked Zi Yan and Dong Han if they missed their old town. He said he wasn’t going to persuade the two otherwise since he knew it would be useless anyway. He said if they wanted to go home, they would all go together. It was like how when they were little, standing in a circle but holding the music box. Dong Han couldn’t take it anymore so he tossed the remote toward the water. Zi Hong was happy that he had let go so they hurdled together for a group hug.
Dong Han was seen standing far away from them minutes later. Zi Hong was asking Chen Jie if it was possible to let them go. Chen Jie couldn’t believe what he was hearing. On the other side, Miao Miao was saying how Zi Yan told her that Zi Yan had a lot to tell her, so she admitted she was the same. She wanted Zi Yan to move in with them later. It seemed like it was set. However, what was troublesome was how Dong Han had wandered off on his own. He didn’t seem to be fine like how Zi Yan seemed to give up on the idea of the plan already. He went to deactivate the bomb.
When he returned, the others were still standing there waiting for him. He took a look at them before speaking. After some ominous words, he called out his three childhood friends, saying he loved them before running off. Yup, he wasn’t giving up as easily. He had strapped some explosives to himself. So now the other four were chasing him, trying to get him to stop. He finally stopped at a clearing, having left them behind a long distance already. He turned to take one last look at them, even smiling, before heading toward the trees. Yup, he committed suicide with the explosives. Miao Miao had Zi Hong to grab her back, but what about Zi Yan? Chen Jie was as shocked as the rest of them, so he hadn’t recovered yet. Zi Yan was able to take several more steps toward the sight, which was still sending smokes up the atmosphere, before breaking down completely. Zi Yan finally blurted out that she was able to see the crescent moon within daylight that Dong Han had mentioned before.
Another tragic scene was when Dong Han’s mother received the last message from him. He said that when she received the message, she would also receive a present. It’s his last Christmas present to her. He thanked her for giving him such a family. What he owed her, he had no way of repaying. So what he wanted was for her not to shed tears because of him.
Yong Mei finally broke the news to her family about her pregnancy, and who the father of her child was. She had also decided to keep the baby. She would one day tell the baby who his/her father was. She wanted the others to think carefully about the situation. She wanted to seek some justice for Dong Han. Head Commissioner Luo said that he owed Dong Han that ‘justice’, so he would take care of it. That seemed to satisfy Yong Mei.
So then people moved on with their lives. Zi Hong was seen back at school, teaching the kids singing and getting them involved in some competition. Yet the point wasn’t about winning or losing but about the music. Zi Hong, Miao Miao, and Yong Mei were seen at the forest hanging paper cranes. Then Chief Zheng was seen talking to Yang Yong Zhao and Miao Miao, and that Yang Yong Zhao wanted to confess his crime. Chief Zheng wanted to forget it and even told Chen Jie and the other two to forget the matter. Mrs. Jiang finally confessed to her doings twenty years ago, even if that was an accident, but she was the one who gave instructions to threaten the others anyway. As for Zi Yan, she was seen in the interrogation room with Chief Zheng with the other three remaining members of the special team standing outside watching. No other details were disclosed about her. At least not yet. Then surprise of all surprises, but possibly not that much, Zi Hong moved back in with Shen You Fu. Miao Miao was seen inside preparing dinner for them all. Even Xuan Xuan was there. Another incident was how Zi Hong managed to go meet up with Jiang Jian Ming. Jiang Jian Ming finally told Zi Hong the truth–with how he didn’t plan on Zi Hong’s existence, but he was very happy to have Zi Hong as a son. Even though Jiang Jian Ming admitted his guilt in not being able to take care of both mother and son, but Zi Hong clarified Jiang Jian Ming only owed his mother, not him since he was his mother’s son, not Jiang Jian Ming’s. Yup, he still hadn’t accepted Jiang Jian Ming.
Then it was revealed where Zi Yan was. She was in prison. Yong Mei came to see her and asked about her well-being. (Really? What kind of question was that?) Zi Yan nodded her head, indicating she was fine. Yong Mei came to brag about how Dong Han had curved a wooden tag with a rose on it for her. So she said that Zi Yan was right that Dong Han liked her and cared for her. Zi Yan only nodded. Yong Mei then told Zi Yan about her decision in keeping the baby. She then asked Zi Yan if Zi Yan wanted to be a mother. She wanted to share the baby. Zi Yan agreed, even shedding some tears.
Then the townspeople of years ago were gathered around those trees like they once promised–after so many things had happened. Yong Mei also took that chance to tell Dong Han’s mother that she was pregnant with Dong Han’s child. Ms. Liu was more than happy, of course. She then looked toward Yong Mei’s mother, who was standing at a distance from them and smiled. It was like they were making peace at last.

As it were, Dong Han was on his way to execute his final plan–in his desperate situation. Yong Mei asked him about time and he said he had a little more time with this meeting. She was happy, of course. She ended up leading him into another room. He seemed anxious yet tried to keep his composure. Then her next action shocked him. She had prepared a birthday cake for him. She urged him to make a wish and blow out the candle yet he was numbed for a little before making a wish. He didn’t blow it out but had used his hand to extinguish it. She was surprised yet didn’t get technical about it, and proceeded to cut the cake instead. He watched her actions and was wagering things inside (or so it seemed) before asking her if she wanted to go out. She said she wanted to yet her mother still didn’t let her, still fearing Zhang Guo Tang and his gang and all. He reassured her by saying with him present, her mother would have nothing to worry about. That didn’t get her excited about a possible trip, but she told him she didn’t want to go out today. When he asked why, she told him it was because there was something more important than going out at that time. He asked her what that was while reaching for his gun, knowing he had to resort to other means with getting her out of there. She said that they were starting over once again, hinting at his previous statement to her about never having a start over, etc. (What?!?!) Her next words got to him all right. (It got to me too! I think the audience would be in for a major heart attack.) Anyway, what she said was she was pregnant with his child. (Again, what?!?! When did that happen?) That also caused Dong Han to let go of his gun. He was indeed shocked. He asked if she was joking around with him. She said she wasn’t. She begged him to say a word or two after a brief moment of silence. He finally got up to leave. She took a different approach, reminding him about how he wanted to go out earlier and maybe they could. He said he have stuff to do so he had to go. She stopped him, asking him if he would come back. He said no. She asked even if she’d given birth to the child. He said no again. After some more rounds of questions and disappointment, she said it was all right he didn’t want to be involved anymore, she only wanted him to tell her what he’d wished earlier. He hesitated before answering, saying that he only wanted her to be safe. After he left, he drove to someplace before crying it out.
Meanwhile, at the secret headquarter, Zi Yan was outside looking at the clouds again. Chen Jie was looking for her and tried to comfort her. Surprisingly, he was calmer than in the past. They somewhat confided in one another, but more Chen Jie than Zi Yan. Chen Jie said that he was wrong regarding Dong Han. Zi Yan said that since the beginning, he wasn’t wrong because he had suspected Dong Han for being the mole. Chen Jie said at first he thought so but then had treated Dong Han like a good fellow cop, even a good brother but it turned out otherwise. He knew it was hard for him to accept it, but he also knew that it was even more terrible for Zi Yan. Chen Jie also offered to lend an ear whenever Zi Yan needed to talk. Zi Yan said that she was fine, Dong Han wasn’t able to hurt her. She said she would definitely catch him. Then she left. Chen Jie took a look at the sky once more before going inside as well.
Then they had the meeting. Xiao He briefed them with how Dong Han had tried to manipulate them from the beginning within the special team. The most unlucky person was obviously Ah Gang. However, Xiao He said that according to Ah Gang, Zhang Guo Tang was willing to leave with Dong Han so it was a mystery as to why Dong Han still wanted to kill him. Xiao He then told them about Dong Han’s real identity. When it was disclosed that Dong Han was one of the kids in the accident of 1992, Zi Yan had looked surprised. At that time, Xiao He was also saying that because of Dong Han’s identity, the reason for killing Zhang Guo Tang would be explained–aka with Dong Han thinking that Zhang Guo Tang was the one responsible for it all. At that time, Chen Jie had spoken up to ask their boss about his knowledge of all their background and doing a background check before selecting them, etc. Chief Zheng said that he did check them out, but there were certain exceptions. Zi Yan was still seen distracted while Chief Zheng asked Xiao He about contacting Dong Han’s mother. Xiao He said that she didn’t pick up when he called but he would continue to try. Chief Zheng then said how things were getting more and more complicated. He pointed out that Dong Han and Zi Hong should know each other and all. Their initial conjecture with there being a third party in this matter, aside from Zi Hong, there was also Dong Han. Then he pondered how many more were involved in this matter. Then Ah Gang came in–still on the phone. He hung up after saying that he would report it. Ah Gang finally approached their boss and said that Dong Han previously went to the Luo resident. Dong Han initially wanted to take Yong Mei with him yet he left alone. Chief Zheng told the others to send out a notice for Dong Han and also told Zi Yan to go talk to Yong Mei since she was closer to Yong Mei and could find out more information. Zi Yan was still distracted yet uttered a word of confirmation about her assignment. Chief Zheng continued by saying that Chen Jie and Ah Gang would follow him, etc. After Chief Zheng left, Ah Gang noticed that Xiao He was distracted so he asked Xiao He about it. Xiao He finally voiced his opinion, saying how it was unbelievable that Dong Han could be bought over (i.e. hinting at one of Chief Zheng’s theories). Ah Gang said he didn’t believe it either. Xiao He reminded Ah Gang that Ah Gang almost got killed. Ah Gang said that if Dong Han wanted to kill him, he wouldn’t be standing there–and even pointed out that it seemed like Dong Han was reluctant. When Xiao He asked Chen Jie, Chen Jie responded by saying that Dong Han didn’t even care for his life, it was unbelievable that he would do it for money. Then Xiao He asked Zi Yan, but she was still distracted. Then she just got up and left. Chen Jie spoke up for her, saying that whatever they didn’t believe, Zi Yan’s feelings would double that. He stated that it was because Zi Yan liked Dong Han even more than them.
Yong Mei’s first words to Zi Yan were asking Zi Yan if Zi Yan came to apologize. (Really?) Zi Yan said it wasn’t. Yong Mei wanted to know what happened since Zi Yan said stuff hadn’t ended yet. Zi Yan told Yong Mei that Zhang Guo Tang died already, and it was Dong Han who killed him. Yong Mei couldn’t believe it. Zi Yan said they couldn’t believe it at first, but a notice had been sent out for Dong Han. That was when Yong Mei fell apart. (Sort of.) Zi Yan than proceeded with her questions about Dong Han seeking Yong Mei out earlier. Yong Mei denied that Dong Han had told her anything. Yong Mei told Zi Yan how she had prepared a cake for Dong Han and how Dong Han’s wish was for her to be safe. Yong Mei asked if Dong Han came to her place after killing Zhang Guo Tang. Zi Yan confirmed. Then Yong Mei went on and on about stuff. What got Zi Yan’s attention the most was Yong Mei disclosing that she was pregnant with Dong Han’s child. Yong Mei said that she previously thought Dong Han was very cruel in saying how he didn’t want to meet again, etc yet now she understood. Zi Yan said perhaps it was so. Yong Mei was ranting on and on about how she didn’t believe that Dong Han was a bad person. Zi Yan couldn’t take it anymore so she got up and told Yong Mei to take care and that she was leaving. Yong Mei asked where Zi Yan was going and if Zi Yan was going to kill Dong Han. Zi Yan said that if Dong Han wanted to kill her, she would. Yong Mei begged Zi Yan not to kill Dong Han since she didn’t want her child without a father. Zi Yan hesitated for a bit before nodding, saying that she promised. Zi Yan finally broke down when she was outside alone. It was indeed very, very, very heartbreaking for her. And then elsewhere that night, Dong Han was seen camping in the woods (or so it seemed) and carving on another wooden piece.
The meeting between Zi Hong and Miao Miao and Jiang Jian Ming finally came about. Jiang Jian Ming said that Zi Hong probably knew already. Zi Hong returned it by saying what did the other party meant. Jiang Jian Ming said that Zi Hong was his son. Zi Hong was still in doubt. Jiang Jian Ming launched into recounting how he met Zi Hong’s mother and how they got together (even with the huge age gap and how Jiang Jian Ming was already married at that time). Upon learning that Zi Hong’s mother was pregnant, he wanted the lady to have an abortion yet she said no. She said he didn’t want the kid yet she did, and that she would take care of the kid so he didn’t need to worry about it. She also suggested that they break up. Then she left the following day. She had kept her promise of not using the kid against him. After those stories, they were back to the main point. Zi Hong asked the old man if he didn’t want him at all. Jiang Jian Ming said he didn’t want Zi Hong from the start. Since it was already cleared, Zi Hong wanted to talk business instead. He wanted money yet the amount he demanded was too much. Zi Hong got riled up, saying how he didn’t care for money. (He was just testing Jiang Jian Ming.) Jiang Jian Ming reminded Zi Hong that Zi Hong asked for money before too. The argument got to the point that Zi Hong almost punched Jiang Jian Ming out, but Miao Miao interfered and pulled Zi Hong back. They finally separated and put a safe distance between one another. Zi Hong was still upset though, yelling out that Jiang Jian Ming couldn’t measure up to his mother. Jiang Jian Ming agreed. Zi Hong then asked about the car accident and Jiang Jian Ming denied. Zi Hong moved on to asking about Project Jing Hai. Jiang Jian Ming once again denied his involvement. Zi Hong said that he was lying, so Jiang Jian Ming said it was up to Zi Hong whether he wanted to believe it or not. Jiang Jian Ming went on to say that Shen You Fu already told Zi Hong that the accident was indeed an accident, and he reasoned that he wouldn’t hurt the person he loved or his son. Zi Hong said he wasn’t Jiang Jian Ming’s son. He moved on to say how he was representing the people of the old town to come and talk to Jiang Jian Ming. Jiang Jian Ming asked Zi Hong what he meant. Zi Hong said they had one common goal, which was to find out the truth so Jiang Jian Ming and his wife should publicly issue an apology. Jiang Jiang Ming, of course, turned down the request and said he didn’t do anything wrong. Zi Hong said if he didn’t apologize, there would be other consequences, including many other innocent people being hurt. Jiang Jian Ming said he didn’t care how many people threaten him, he wouldn’t do it as told, even if it was Zi Hong. He then disclosed that Zi Hong’s name was chosen by him (aka what Zi Hong said about him being cold-blooded and all, regardless, Zi Hong was still his son). Then he left. Zi Hong spoke up after a moment of silence, saying he was all right yet he had failed. He told Miao Miao to be prepared since, after today, they would be enemies of everyone, even her grandfather. After some more mushy moments between them, they finally called up Grandpa Yang to report back about their failure to negotiate. Grandpa Yang responded by saying that they had to go forth with their final plan then. Grandpa Yang also said that Chief Zheng had called the previous day telling him about Zi Hong, etc. After that, he declared that from that day on, Zi Hong and Miao Miao were severed from Project Returning Home. (Wow, nice! Only protecting his flesh and blood and the chick’s boyfriend, not caring for others.) Miao Miao cranked up her attitude once again and ranted stuff. But then she broke down again, asking how could she survive without her grandpa, etc. Grandpa Yang actually laughed and said that he loved Miao Miao’s scolding the most. She told him not to joke around anymore. He told her and Zi Hong to take care before hanging up. Miao Miao tried calling him on the house phone yet he didn’t pick up either. Ms. Liu finally spoke up and told Grandpa Yang if he wanted to leave, he could since she could finish their plan alone. He turned her offer down, saying that he had to do it. And then it was back to Miao Miao and Zi Hong. Miao Miao wanted to go home and check yet Zi Hong pulled her back. It wasn’t because he wanted to stop her, but it was because he wanted to go with her. When they arrived, no one was there. There was only a letter left behind for them. The majority were somewhat of a summary and his feelings, but one of the major parts was how he promised Miao Miao that innocent people wouldn’t be hurt and that he only wanted to leave behind an impact.
While they were on their way to somewhere though, Grandpa Yang received a call from Dong Han. Dong Han asked if Jiang Jian Ming had agreed to their terms. Grandpa Yang said it wasn’t successful. Dong Han then said that so they had no choice but to proceed with the next part of the plan. Grandpa Yang confirmed yet told Dong Han that it wasn’t his business anymore. (Really? A little late for that, he’d already gone crazy.) Dong Han said he couldn’t stay out of it, and that the person who should be out of the plan should be his mother, not him. Ms. Liu disagreed. Dong Han reasoned that he already killed three people so he was in deep hence she should be the one staying out of it. She didn’t want to. Dong Han said it was too late since he already executed that plan and had already sent Grandpa Yang an e-mail so they should be clear of the details when they open it. Dong Han went on to say that he would be responsible for the rest of the plan while letting Grandpa Yang exit safely out of it. Grandpa Yang, of course, didn’t agree. It didn’t matter, Dong Han was hanging up. After he hung up, he was looking at the power station nearby.
Back at the secret headquarter, they were discussing how they weren’t able to reach Dong Han’s mother. Soon though, Xiao He rushed in to tell them about Dong Han’s e-mail. He soon turned on the monitor to show them a clip. Dong Han first clarified that he was the one who killed those three people, not Zi Hong. He told the others that they could stop looking for Zi Hong now. He then proceeded to tell them about what happened years ago, and how people were hurt during those times of the land redevelopment and much more before moving on to the accident of 1992. While the others were focusing on the clip, Zi Yan was seen distracted and almost in tears. Dong Han finally got to the point, saying how no one was doing anything regarding the situation yet he was. He said he was the only one plotting everything right from the start and that no one else was involved. He named his terms. The first one was that Jiang Jian Ming would publicly admit that he had told Zhang Guo Tang and the two to cause the accident of 1992. The second one was that Mrs. Jiang had to tell them what Project Jing Hai was. The third part was for Jiang Jian Ming to publicly apologize for what happened. If not, he would blow up a certain place. He gave them a 24-hour deadline. After that segment, Grandpa Yang told Xiao Zhao (one of his helpers) to drive him to the head councilman’s place and then take Ms. Liu home. She protested yet he said that at the current state, the less involved, the better. And when it was back to the secret headquarter, Xiao He said that he wasn’t able to track the location of where the e-mail had been sent from. Chief Zheng told Zi Yan and Chen Jie to go look for Dong Han. Ah Gang was able to retrieve some evidence such as the hoodies wore during the crimes that they’d seen in the clips, so Chief Zheng told him to go have it checked out while he went to meet up with Head Councilman Luo and Chairman Jiang. Both were still keeping their lips tight, despite the deadline looming ahead. The other two were ganging up on Chief Zheng, wondering why Chief Zheng believed Dong Han’s words. Chief Zheng said he didn’t, but now it involved too many people and if it were true, he couldn’t risk it. Head Councilman Luo said he would take responsibility for it. Chief Zheng asked him if he was still willing to take responsibility when it involved all of those innocent people. He confirmed. Chief Zheng said all right but he pointed out that the first person having to take responsibility for it would be him. (Yup, always.) Chief Zheng then said that if the worst were to come, he would resign yet he said before the resignation, he would have to use all his energy to find out what Project Jing Hai was. So since no one made a move or take any actions, Dong Han contacted them again and gave them some coordinates. It was a nearby power station. Chief Zheng called Chen Jie up and told him to go to the place and check it out. So Chen Jie and Zi Yan were rushing around the area to find Dong Han yet was unsuccessful. It was too late. They were able to see the power station but it was still a distance from them. The explosion caused blackouts for a portion of the city. Like Chief Zheng declared, Dong Han was serious about his words. Dong Han sent them another clip, saying that that was just a little warning so if the deadline came around, they better do as he said. When Chief Zheng asked Yang Yong Zhao for advice and wanted him to somehow get to Dong Han since he was Dong Han’s teacher, after all, Yang Yong Zhao said that they should investigate into Project Jing Hai more. He claimed it was because how the others were being too secretive, meaning they had something to hide. One of the officers said that it would be somewhat troublesome with what Yang Yong Zhao wanted them to do. Yang Yong Zhao stated that it would be even more troublesome if the explosion were to occur. After the brief meeting, Chief Zheng went over to Grandpa Yang, saying that Zi Hong and Miao Miao were in the clear now so they would be fine. Grandpa Yang only uttered words of gratitude toward Chief Zheng.
While Zi Hong and Miao Miao were elsewhere eating that night, they heard the news with Dong Han’s situation and how he had admitted to all crimes, plus the current plan. Yong Mei and her family were also watching the news at their place so she was more than shocked by what was going on, asking if it was true. Her mother, after turning the TV off, said, of course, it wasn’t true. So it was back to Zi Hong and Miao Miao. Miao Miao said that since Dong Han admitted to all crimes and clarified that it was only him, he would be alone now. Zi Hong reminded Miao Miao what she said previously, not leaving anyone behind, even her grandpa. He went on to say that since they weren’t being chased anymore, they could go to the police. Miao Miao asked if he thought her grandpa was there. He confirmed and even said that now her grandpa’s plan had been taken over by Dong Han.
So the ‘high and mighty’ family finally sat down to discuss the matter regarding Project Jing Hai. Well, according to Head Commissioner Luo, his wife did not know. And of course, Yong Mei didn’t know yet she was spying on them. Whatever it was they were going to say, it wasn’t disclosed to the viewers.
Chief Zheng and Yang Yong Zhao were talking. Chief Zheng showed Yang Yong Zhao the wooden piece. He said that he was half surprised and half saddened after seeing it. He couldn’t believe that such a talented person like Dong Han would head toward such a road. What was frustrating was how they couldn’t find out what Project Jing Hai was. After a while, Chief Zheng received a call from Zi Hong so he was more than glad. Then Chen Jie went to fetch them and brought them back to the secret headquarter. They were making an exception with letting the two enter. Miao Miao took the chance of a brief pause to ask about her grandpa. Chen Jie said that he just left not long ago. She then asked if her grandpa knew she was coming. Chen Jie said that he knew. Then they were in the meeting area. Chief Zheng introduced some others to them before telling them they were talking about Project Jing Hai. Miao Miao asked if her grandpa knew of the meeting. Chief Zheng said he knew. Then Chief Zheng told the others to take a seat since the meeting was about to start. Soon, Zi Yan was seen passing around some files for the meeting. She had paused to smile at Miao Miao–to which Miao Miao returned the gesture. When Miao Miao attempted to call her grandpa again, he didn’t pick up.
The meeting commenced at last. Apparently, they managed to get a judge’s order to unseal the files of Project Jing Hai hence having more information on it. The thing was while they were discussing it, it shifted it to the Luo resident where Head Councilman Luo was explaining to his wife about Project Jing Hai as well. Then the scene was brought back to the secret headquarter but had focused on Zi Hong and Miao Miao walking outside. Miao Miao was still worried about her grandpa. Zi Hong suggested that they made a trip back to the forest tomorrow. He had a plan.
Zi Yan and Dong Han’s face-off scene finally happened. She saw him so she drew her weapon and he had heard her so he had turned around in time to point a gun at her as well. She spoke up first, saying how he’d tricked the others, including her. He returned it by saying, “So?” Then the scene zoomed to the other officer and he heard a shot. Then Dong Han’s car was seen fleeing the scene. The officer quickly called in to report before rushing toward the direction of the shot earlier. When he arrived at Zi Yan’s side, it was seen that she was kneeling on the ground, covering one hand. She was bleeding. It was too obvious that Dong Han had shot her. They were really tightening the security after the incident, so Dong Han was seen fleeing on foot. Zooming forward, the police were seen at another location. Then Ah Gang reported to Chief Zheng that Zi Yan’s wound wasn’t extreme so she only needed several stitches. Chief Zheng asked if she was still moving around. Ah Gang said that even Chen Jie couldn’t stop her. When asked about Dong Han, Ah Gang said they were still looking for him. Chief Zheng then turned to Yang Yong Zhao, asking if it was possible that Dong Han would go find Jiang Jian Ming. Yang Yong Zhao said it was possible. Chief Zheng then told Ah Gang to tell Chen Jie and Zi Yan to go to the Luo resident, considering how Zi Yan was especially close to their family and all. After Ah Gang left, they began discussing Dong Han’s plan and a possible way to solve this matter.
At the Luo resident, Chen Jie stopped Zi Yan when they got out of the car, asking her if she was really all right. She reassured him that she was fine before heading inside. Mrs. Luo was waiting for her so she introduced Zi Yan to her mother. Yong Mei was there as well with her grandmother. After the introduction, Mrs. Luo told her mother that the police had sent Zi Yan there to protect them. After her grandmother and mother left, Yong Mei quickly pestered Zi Yan for information regarding Dong Han. Zi Yan shrugged her hand off. It was then that Yong Mei asked her about her hand. Zi Yan said that it was just a little wound and that she was all right. After some hesitation, she told Yong Mei that he saw Dong Han earlier that day. Yong Mei asked if Dong Han was all right. Zi Yan nodded and said it seemed so. Then Yong Mei finally realized it, so she asked if Zi Yan’s wound was because of Dong Han. Zi Yan nodded again and said that they should talk about that later. However, Yong Mei went on and asked if it was because of how she asked Zi Yan not to hurt Dong Han hence Zi Yan ended up getting hurt. Zi Yan said it wasn’t so, and that Yong Mei shouldn’t think too much. Zi Yan finally excused herself.
Later, Yong Mei was preparing juices and cookies in the kitchen when Chen Jie entered. He said that her mother wanted him to help her. She thanked him before asking him about Zi Yan’s wound. He said it wasn’t too bad. She then asked if it was Dong Han who shot Zi Yan. Chen Jie confirmed. As Yong Mei was placing the juices and cookies into a trade, Chen Jie proceeded with putting the remaining of the juice back into the fridge. While doing that, Chen Jie said that it was indeed unbelievable how things turned out, because Dong Han was indeed a very good colleague. Chen Jie even went on to say that he thought he was going to get to drink their ‘happy wine’ (喜酒). Upon hearing “their”, Yong Mei asked what Chen Jie meant. Chen Jie asked back if Yong Mei didn’t know. Yong Mei asked Chen Jie to clarify. Chen Jie said that they were always in charge of protecting Yong Mei, so how could Yong Mei not know. It was then that Yong Mei realized Chen Jie was talking about Dong Han and Zi Yan.
*WARNING*: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you DO NOT want to be spoiled, please DO NOT read. You have been warned.
As it were, the chase began after Xiao He informed Chen Jie and Ah Gang of Zi Hong’s whereabouts. The strangest thing was they soon lost track of Zi Hong. It was because Zi Hong had dodged into a parking lot complex to avoid them. So he didn’t get caught after all. Unlike what it seemed to imply with the intensity of the previous episode’s exit point.
Zi Hong finally met up with Miao Miao and his father. When Miao Miao asked about Zhang Guo Tang, Zi Hong told her that he’d sent Zhang Guo Tang off to the police already. After the initial question though, he didn’t seem to be so chatty or would ask of his father’s well-being like he would usually focus on like in the past. Instead of delaying the matter any longer, Zi Hong went straight to the point, stating what Zhang Guo Tang had said previously to him (aka Shen You Fu’s involvement with the accident 20 years ago). He begged the man to speak up, to just give him one response. Mr. Shen admitted his part in the tragic incident. (So it made sense he seemed more than riled up when Zi Hong said he wanted to seek out Zhang Guo Tang and find an answer. Well, it made a lot of sense that he was worried for Zi Hong’s safety, but it also explained why the old man seemed so panicky.) It was like how Zhang Guo Tang had said, it was just a warning to them so they would move yet a little threat had turned into the worst. (Jeez, dressing up creepy and standing in the middle of the street on a rainy day, and at such a tricky area too, what do they expect? So they did try to undo the damage and save the others but what did they expect to happen? The obvious rainy day, the slippery roads, would the vehicles stop safely in that condition?) Anyway, after the accident, they lied to the police, saying that they heard the news of the accident hence rushing over to help. They were indeed scared and didn’t know it would turn out that way yet the truth was they were all involved right from the beginning. They ended up being written as heroes, trying to save the families instead of murderers. After he was done telling his tale, Mr. Shen said he didn’t deserve to be called “Dad” by Zi Hong, because he was a conspirator. That was the reason why he took Zi Hong in because he wanted to make up for his past wrongdoings. However, Zi Hong knew it wasn’t all fake with Mr. Shen and Mrs. Shen taking him in. He knew because they treated him so well. Then he asked if what Zhang Guo Tang said was true, regarding how they didn’t mean to kill anyone. Mr. Shen confirmed that it was indeed an accident. Even if that was true, Zi Hong still couldn’t believe that an accident had killed 5 people and disabled his mother like that. It indeed was hard to accept. It wasn’t until Miao Miao reached a hand over to comfort Zi Hong that he finally pulled himself together. He then asked if Jiang Jian Ming was the one who had issued the orders. Mr. Shen denied it. Zi Hong said that Zhang Guo Tang said they received a call from Mrs. Jiang. Mr. Shen said that was true, but Jiang Jian Ming didn’t know about the matter until afterward. He really wanted Zi Hong to believe him yet Zi Hong said he was still hiding some things. Zi Hong said that there was some other reason as to why Mr. Shen had adopted Zi Hong, and it wasn’t just to make up for his wrongdoings. Mr. Shen asked what Zi Hong had found out. Zi Hong got up before saying that Zhang Guo Tang couldn’t harm anyone anymore so Mr. Shen could go home by himself since he couldn’t send him off. Zi Hong also told Mr. Shen to send words along to Jiang Jian Ming that he will go see Jiang Jian Ming soon. Then he grabbed Miao Miao’s hand and pulled her along.
So they finally got a chance to interrogate Zhang Guo Tang. Zhang Guo Tang indeed was tough, not cracking at all and was still relaxed like he was on some vacation. He ignored Chief Zheng’s words and seemed not to care. After Chief Zheng was done, Zhang Guo Tang finally spoke up and said that he would be free soon, whether they believed him or not. He continued taunting them by saying that his friend wasn’t just one person like Liu Yue Ying. He then turned to Zi Yan and Dong Han, asking them to say a word or two so he could recognize them. He was definitely having fun with taunting them. What got even more amusing was how he said that the voice was very familiar, turning back to Chief Zheng. Chief Zheng said to keep his attitude up when he stand in front of the judge because he would definitely get the death sentence that he wanted. Zhang Guo Tang said he only wanted freedom.
Back outside, Dong Han said that they should transfer Zhang Guo Tang to the secret headquarter so it would be safer. Chief Zheng agreed and told Dong Han and Zi Yan to keep guard for the night. Chief Zheng said that he would be more at ease with the two being there. After Chief Zheng left, Zi Yan said she initially wanted to go buy the gift but can’t anymore. Dong Han asked her what she meant with the ‘gift’. She had to remind him about his birthday being the next day. He then realized it and said he had forgotten about it. She hit him before saying that he was such a workaholic that he had forgotten his own birthday. She scanned the surrounding area before lacing her hand with his, saying that they should go. Dong Han told her to go first since he wanted to call his mother first. She said she would wait for him yet he turned her down, saying that he would meet her there after the call. She agreed and headed off. And Dong Han indeed called his mother. Yet it wasn’t what Zi Yan would imagine about the conversation. Ms. Liu said that she heard the news regarding Zhang Guo Tang’s arrest and asked if he ratted out Dong Han already. Dong Han said no, but Zhang Guo Tang had implied that they would save him soon or he would rat them out thus sabotaging their plans. Ms. Liu asked about their next move. Dong Han said he would take care of it. Ms. Liu, worried, asked if Dong Han really wanted to risk his career and release Zhang Guo Tang. Dong Han reassured her that nothing would happen. She attempted to convince him otherwise yet he said he had to go. Not long after, he received some more text messages from Yong Mei. She mentioned about Zhang Guo Tang’s arrest but was also saddened that the mission would be over leading to his departure. She asked if they could meet one more time. Dong Han indeed took full advantage of the situation, finally responding back to her, saying that he would meet up with her tomorrow. Yong Mei, indeed, was very happy, not knowing what she was walking into.
Meanwhile elsewhere, Miao Miao was questioning Zi Hong about what happened earlier. When she asked him about the incident of 20 years ago really being an accident, he shook his head. She then asked him what he had found out. A brief silence between them before he spoke up. He said that since little, he had thought of Zhang Guo Tang and the other two as murderers because he had remembered clearly what had happened. When he’d grown up, he often thought back of what happened. The images of Zhang Guo Tang and the other two were blocking their path, Xiao Cao’s father was the one who swerved in fear that he would hit the three. Every time he thought of that part, he didn’t dare to think anymore. He couldn’t believe it was just an accident, just like how he’d said previously when they were still with Mr. Shen. If it was an accident, who would he seek justice with? He also pondered how Dong Han would react if he knew the truth. He said that during the accident, Dong Han was asleep so he only learned of the details from Zi Hong afterward. Zi Hong also said that if Dong Han knew it was just an accident, Dong Han would definitely go crazy. Then Ms. Liu called, asking to meet up the next day.
When Zi Hong and Miao Miao went to meet up with Ms. Liu the next morning, she asked them if they wanted to join their Project Returning Home. Then she told them that she wanted them to meet some old friends. They were all from their town ages back. Ms. Liu soon elaborated that they were all living evidence of Project Jing Hai. Zi Hong asked her what she meant. What shocked Zi Hong and Miao Miao the most was seeing Grandpa Yang showing up. Yes, a major surprise indeed. He explained how he found out about Project Jing Hai or more like the lack of knowledge and how he got conned–along with the others. Miao Miao’s father’s death wasn’t that simple, i.e. the man died because of poison. Grandpa Yang got forgiven by his son before the latter died. However, he told Grandpa Yang to gather the townspeople together and ask for forgiveness. Since then, he’d been trying to seek justice for them. Yes, the leader behind Project Returning Home was Grandpa Yang. So he was the person who sought out Zhang Guo Tang and got him to come back. (Getting confusing again but makes sense, lol.) When Zi Hong asked why, Grandpa Yang said it all started with the song “The New World.” He then reminisced about fifty years ago. It had to do with the young head of the town, who often brought along a gramophone and introduced the song “The New World” to them. Of course, the townspeople didn’t understand those types of music or heard of the musician Antonín Leopold Dvořák (the song is actually called “From the New World”). Anyway, that was also around the same time that the land redevelopment project came about, and that young man had tried to persuade them to cooperate with the project. At first, the townspeople were really against him yet he used the song “The New World” to get on their good side. That young man was Jiang Jian Ming. After many heartbreaking recounts, Grandpa Yang finally mentioned the details regarding the accident of twenty years ago. He said he returned on the second day of the accident, but it was still raining so most of the traces of the accidents had been washed away. Therefore, he wasn’t able to investigate anything. Ms. Liu interfered when Grandpa Yang blamed himself. She said he was able to investigate the whereabouts of the three kids, allowing the others to adopt them so he had done all he could. That was when Zi Hong and Miao Miao reacted. Grandpa Yang clarified how he and Ms. Liu had found Zi Hong’s mother and were heartbroken with how the lady had turned out. When he saw the music box on her lap, he remembered back to the song Jiang Jian Ming had given them, a big lie. He was unwilling to let the others off so easily after how people were hurt. He finally initiated the plan when the head councilman was about to accept his new rank. He also contacted Zhang Guo Tang. His initial plan was to let Zhang Guo Tang go after Jiang Jian Ming and exposed Jiang Jian Ming. Yet what was unexpected was how Zhang Guo Tang didn’t keep his words with how they didn’t plan to hurt anyone. That was when things went haywire. So Jiang Jian Ming’s assistant’s death was all Zhang Guo Tang’s doing and the beginning of the torn between the two sides, i.e. Grandpa Yang was upset over the move hence Zhang Guo Tang going after Miao Miao. Zi Hong finally reacted and said that they were acting like a bunch of terrorists and that they shouldn’t seek out Zhang Guo Tang, causing so many problems. Zi Hong pointed out that Zhang Guo Tang obviously understood that Grandpa Yang and the others were just using him to go against Jiang Jian Ming. Grandpa Yang didn’t care, he wanted to seek justice for all the others. Ms. Liu also jumped in to back Grandpa Yang up. Zi Hong once again repeated what he had said to Dong Han initially, about how innocent would be hurt, etc. Grandpa Yang reminded Zi Hong to think about his mother. Zi Hong didn’t care for Grandpa Yang’s justifications. Grandpa Yang then disclosed a secret that he accidentally found out and didn’t mean to keep it from Zi Hong. Yet now, he had to say it out, which had to do with the music box Zi Hong’s mother treasured so much since ages back. Grandpa Yang had seen it somewhere before and claimed it was identical. The person who had it made said that there were only two of those music boxes. Grandpa Yang wanted to pause for effect, asking Zi Hong if he could say it out. Grandpa Yang realized Zi Hong must have known so he asked about it. Zi Hong said he wasn’t sure, but he could only guess. Ms. Liu jumped in to ask how long had he known. It had been 10 years already. Grandpa Yang said if Zi Hong didn’t want him to say it out, he wouldn’t. Zi Hong blurted out, at last, not wanting to delay any longer. It was Jiang Jian Ming. (So if Jiang Jian Ming’s Zi Hong’s biological father, then Zi Hong’s Yong Mei’s uncle? Nice, lol. Or not.) So their last resort was having Zi Hong go and confront Jiang Jian Ming of the matter. (Wow, tragic.) Zi Hong, after much hesitation, finally accepted to join them. He was their last ‘peaceful’ plan with forcing Jiang Jian Ming to admit his part in all the tragedies since ages ago, not just what happened twenty years ago. Zi Hong wanted to use that chance to delay the madness and their other bizarre plans. Miao Miao, of course, was on the same side as Zi Hong, not wanting them to continue on like that. Grandpa Yang went ballistic saying that what he wanted to do, no one could stop, even if it was Miao Miao. Yet soon, the others departed, leaving Zi Hong and Miao Miao behind.
Mr. Shen finally got the chance to report to his boss about what happened. He said that Zi Hong knew already. Chairman Jiang asked Mr. Shen if Zi Hong hated him. Mr. Shen replied that he didn’t know. Chairman Jiang then asked if Zi Hong hated Mr. Shen. He didn’t know either but he said Zi Hong didn’t call him “Dad” anymore. Chairman Jiang said that Zi Hong had gone overboard, and continued on with how Zi Hong could hate him but shouldn’t hate Mr. Shen.
Then it was back to Zi Hong and Miao Miao again. Miao Miao was saying how she finally learned of her father’s real death cause. She understood why her grandpa was so upset, and even conjured up such a plan. After some more pondering about Grandpa Yang and her situation, they moved on to discuss Zi Hong and Jiang Jian Ming. Miao Miao pondered if Zi Hong wanted to know about the other reason that Mr. Shen adopted Zi Hong was because of Jiang Jian Ming wanting him to. Zi Hong admitted it. He then recounted one of the times he followed Miao Miao during high school. That was the time that he had told Miao Miao before. The time he almost followed her to her home yet didn’t want to enter. He gave up and went to visit his mother yet didn’t want to come in. He then turned back out to the old path to exit the place. Yet he spotted his mother being wheeled by someone. That person looked familiar from behind and when that person turned around, he realized it was Jiang Jian Ming. Jiang Jian Ming probably thought it was safe to visit that day. Zi Hong didn’t know what Jiang Jian Ming was saying to his mother but also saw the man cried. He guessed that Jiang Jian Ming was his father. Then Zi Hong talked about his conflicting feelings at times with Jiang Jian Ming.
So they finally escorted Zhang Guo Tang to the secret headquarter. Before getting out of the van, Dong Han had used his phone. It was kind of hard to tell which one though. Yet Xiao He’s call to Chen Jie after they got out of the van confirmed that it was the secret cell phone Dong Han used on several occasions already. Chen Jie reassured Xiao He that Zhang Guo Tang was already handcuffed and secured already so it wasn’t his cell phone or anything like that. Xiao He wanted Chen Jie to come and check it out. Chen Jie told Dong Han and Ah Gang to be careful as he told Zi Yan to follow him. When they entered the control room, Xiao He quickly pointed out the signal of an unknown cell phone appearing on the radar. Zi Yan spoke up to say what if it wasn’t Zhang Guo Tang’s. Back outside, Dong Han and Ah Gang were dragging Zhang Guo Tang in. Zhang Guo Tang asked to go to the restroom. Ah Gang turned him down, telling him to wait. Zhang Guo Tang continued with taunting them. Ah Gang didn’t want to play games with him. As he turned to taunt Dong Han, Xiao He was saying how if it wasn’t Zhang Guo Tang, it could be Dong Han or Ah Gang. Chen Jie said it couldn’t be Dong Han. Xiao He was pondering about Ah Gang. Zi Yan said they should be careful and alert the other two regarding some suspicious activities. Chen Jie agreed, telling Zi Yan to call Dong Han and he would call Ah Gang. So while Ah Gang was pushing Zhang Guo Tang along, Dong Han fell back and turned off his secret cell phone. He then tackled Ah Gang, apologizing to him and took his gun before freeing Zhang Guo Tang. Zhang Guo Tang said he recognized Dong Han’s voice. Dong Han told him that they didn’t have much time so he shouldn’t spout nonsense. Inside the control room, Xiao He couldn’t scan the signals from the secret cell phone anymore. That was when Chen Jie told Zi Yan to go and check it out.
Dong Han led Zhang Guo Tang outside yet it wasn’t to release him. He tossed Zhang Guo Tang a wooden tag, telling him to read the names on the tag. Those were his family members. So while Dong Han was confronting Zhang Guo Tang, Chen Jie and Zi Yan finally found Ah Gang on the floor. They rushed over to him and asked about what happened. Ah Gang blurted out “Dong Han”. Zi Yan asked him what happened to Dong Han. Ah Gang said that Dong Han was the mole. That sure shocked the other two. However, what was more shocking was what Dong Han did next outside. After Dong Han told Zhang Guo Tang about the three people who were killed twenty years ago, Dong Han said they were waiting for him. Dong Han retrieved his gun and shot Zhang Guo Tang. It wasn’t too surprising, considering his past actions. It was still shocking in the sense that it was Zhang Guo Tang, and it was right there. Zhang Guo Tang definitely didn’t see that coming. The other three heard the shot, but only Chen Jie and Zi Yan rushed outside to check. Dong Han, of course, fled. He was indeed cautious and natural. He walked out of there like nothing happened. He only had to dodge Chen Jie and Zi Yan, after all, considering how he was still a cop to the other officers so they only rushed by him to check things out when they heard the gunshot. When Chen Jie and Zi Yan were by Zhang Guo Tang’s body, Chen Jie was beyond himself. He blurted out, “How could it be Dong Han?” He had every right to be furious, considering how he’d been so deceived. Yet he was still their leader and quickly called Xiao He up. Then he rushed out of there, making up for the lost time–with Zi Yan in toll. As for Dong Han, he tossed his badge and phones (yes, both the official one and the secret one) and got in his car to escape. And what was so grand about it was that he deceived the guards along the path too, saluting to them as he drove past. Then there was Chen Jie and Zi Yan, rushing outside–with Chen Jie yelling out Dong Han’s name with much rage.
Meanwhile, Grandpa Yang and Ms. Liu finally made it back to their place. Ms. Liu was convincing Grandpa Yang not to be upset, saying that Miao Miao was also right with her thoughts. She also reminded Grandpa Yang that he initially didn’t want Miao Miao too involved. Before long, Grandpa Yang’s cell phone rang. It was Dong Han calling in. Dong Han had called Grandpa Yang “Teacher.” (So he had another backup phone. Okay, that made sense. He had to be prepared, considering how he was in a dangerous spot.) Dong Han first reassured Grandpa Yang that it was safe since he was using a different phone to call. Then he asked to speak to his mother. Grandpa Yang placed him on speaker. Dong Han told his mother that the cops will come to look for her soon. She asked why, and he had to confess that he just killed Zhang Guo Tang. He said that Zhang Guo Tang was out of control already so Zhang Guo Tang would rat them out regardless. Dong Han then told his mother to tell the cops that she didn’t know anything if they were to ask. He also told them that Project Returning Home must be carried out to the end and that he could take the blame/face the punishment if it were to come to that. He said his next step was to take along Yong Mei as a hostage. Grandpa Yang told him not to go too far. He said that it was too slow, and then he confessed to the other two murders. He said it would even out with his family members. Grandpa Yang told him he and Zhang Guo Tang were the same now, both were equally insane. Dong Han said that he couldn’t let his teacher take the fall for it, because he knew Grandpa Yang would have to take care of Zhang Guo Tang sooner or later, considering how Zhang Guo Tang was a threat to their side too (possibly exposing them and preventing them from carrying out the plans). He continued by saying how he didn’t have a choice anymore but to proceed with the next step. Grandpa Yang pointed out that Yong Mei was innocent. Grandpa Yang said that Zi Hong and Miao Miao already agreed to join and would go confront Jiang Jian Ming. Dong Han said that with Yong Mei, they have a higher rate of success. He also didn’t want to wait anymore. Ms. Liu was beyond tears now, begging Dong Han not to do it. Yet Dong Han said he couldn’t wait anymore, and hung up after a few more words. Grandpa Yang finally realized what he had done with dragging in the third generation. He said if he had carried out the plan himself, this wouldn’t happen. He then turned to Ms. Liu and apologized to her.
Dong Han proceeded as planned. He got to the Luo resident and flashed out his smile to the officers on duty and breezed past the entrance in no time. As he entered the place, he called out Yong Mei’s name several times. It wasn’t long before Yong Mei stepped out to greet him with her usual bright smile. What now?
