Weibo: Settings 2

A little something to keep track of from the last few times:

1 Introduction
2 Basic Navigation
3 Navigation 2
4 Settings

Now to continue on the most important section of all. As we recall, we’re still on the right side of that long strip:

IV.

Remember how I said every thing is optional at the beginning of the last post regarding ‘Setting’? This section is the most important and it might be good that you change some of the settings, such as those relating to security so that your information is protected. I’ll try my best to make them clear.

A. 个人资料 = Personal Information

Basic Information

登录名 = Log-in
Nickname
Real Name
Location (Box to the left = Region/Area, Box to the right = Exact Place) – Kind of different for some cases, if you can’t figure it out, hit me up since I’m lazy to list every case.
生日 = Birth-date (年 = Year, 月 = Month, 日 = Day)
Blog Address
No Blog? Create one.
Frequently Used E-mail (The link next to it is to change your current e-mail address)
Brief/Short Description

See the drop-down list next to some of the boxes? (The ones to the right.) Those are there so you could control who could see that information.

Visible to Everyone
Visible Only to the people who you are following
Visible Only to you
The button reads ‘保存’, which is ‘Save’. Once you’re done, just click on that.

Change Password

Current Password
New Password
Security Strength
Confirm Password (aka type the new password in again)

Click on the button when you’re done.

Education Information

Add Education Information, the drop-down list is for visibility (aka scroll back up to see what all it means if you forgot already)
School Type/ Level
School Name, the box next over is the year (i.e. Class of )
Department (What department were you under? Relevant to college level. You can leave it blank if you don’t want to reveal.)

Green Button = Save
Silver Button = Cancel

The difference with this from the first time I took a look is now you could add more than one school. So you could add another after you finished the current one.

Career/Employment Information

添加职业信息 = Add Career/Employment Information
Location (Left Box = Region/Area, Right Box = Exact/ Specific Area)
Name of the place
工作时间  =  Time / Year (至 = To)
Department/ Position

*My advice: DON’T share too much, LOL! Major stalking access here, it goes both ways. Basic info is all right…but might not be too good of an idea.

Personal Tab

Add Tags
Labels/ tags you might be interested in

I guess this is where you add tags for topics that you are interested in knowing more about. Kind of irrelevant for me since I don’t focus on it much.

Personalized Domain Name

你已经设置个性域名 = Personal Domain Name You Have Set (Yours would be different here if you haven’t set it yet. Just choose some word–could be your nickname or whatever. Choose carefully because once you set it, you can’t change it. So might want to come back later until you think of a good one that you like.)
Add to Favorites (aka Bookmark it)
Invite a Friend to follow you

Delivery Address

Do we need to get that personal? I’m skipping this unless you honestly want to share your address or do even more here–aside from keeping in touch with some friends or stalking celebs, etc.

Time to fix your hair and pose! (Just kidding!) This is your avatar. The one that would appear each time you post and is also in your profile page.

Okay, the left button is for upload from your computer. The right button is to capture an image if you have a camera nearby (i.e. camera on your laptop or you’re using your mobile gadgets that has camera access). After it’s done loading, you would see it appearing on the left side with the option for you to adjust it around and crop, etc.

Okay, mobile stuffs so you can add your number, etc. (But I’m going to skip too since I’m getting lazy. Maybe I’m going to come back later.)

Privacy Setting

Set who could comment on my Weibo
Everyone (not including users in your blacklist)
People who you are following

Set who could send me private messages or referrals
Everyone (not including users in your blacklist)
People who you are following

允许 = Allowed
不允许 = Not Allowed

This is if you want to display your location or not (aka if you want people to know where you are, etc).

Allow people to find me by my
Real Name
Phone Number

Private State (Only show the medals inside my homepage)
Public State (Allow others to see my medals)

Blacklist

= Users added to the blacklist will not be able to follow you or comment on your posts.
= If you have followed him/her, that connection will be removed.
= No one is in your blacklist.

That’s my current status since I haven’t added anyone or encountered any troublemakers. But in the future, if I do add anyone (knocks on wood), there would be a list there.

So here we go with more randomness. Oy…

This is the notification thing that I sort of mentioned before in one of the ‘Navigation’ posts. But here, you’re going to be able to control what notices you want to receive. Might be a good idea to receive notices on everything since you might not log-in as often and might miss a bunch of stuff.

Here are all the possible notices you could receive:

条新评论,查看评论 = New Comment, View Comments
New Fan, View Fans
New Private Message, View Private Messages
New Message To Me, View Messages Directed at Me
New Forward, View Posts
New Notice, View Notices

NOTE (Tuesday, July 5th, 2011): This was added recently to ensure picture rights, etc. And possibly another way to make it look cool with the pictures, lol.

Watermark Styles
Weibo Nickname = This is how your nickname will appear
Weibo’s Icon = This is the mini version of the picture reflecting in the background (but the reflection won’t show in the actual picture)
Weibo’s Address = Your Weibo Address
水印位置 = Position of Watermark
Bottom Left Corner (The default setting)
Bottom Center
Center of the Image

Just click on the options or undo selection to see how it looks, adjusting it to your preferred settings. (Remember to scroll down and save it after you’re done.)

c. 邮件 = Mail

The checkbox is to allow Weibo to send e-mail alerts to you.

d. 语言 = Language

This is for you to set your language preference. There are only two options–traditional (繁体) and simplified (简体). Leave it–unless you know it. The default is simplified though.

F. 我的勋章 = My Medal (or Profile Stamp as I like to call it)

My Medal

Okay, this one shows how many of the medals/stamps you could earn. The ones that are showing up in full colors are the ones you earned already (like above) and the ones that are still fading are the ones you still haven’t acquired. Easy? YAY! Let’s move on…

What does each mean? YES, getting back to more explanation…more headaches. But it’s okay. This one is kind of for fun. I’ll start from left to right and then move down to the next line. Okay? Great…

Weibo Control = What you do is post for three consecutive days and you get the first one.

呼风唤雨 = Hu Feng Huan Yu = Calling Wind and Summoning Rain = Nice title? Love this one the most. Anyway, you get this when you invite friends to use Weibo. The first one is earned by recommending and/or inviting three people to use Weibo.

Favorite Sofa = Comment the world out of others’ posts. That’s it! (The first one is earned at 10, not 3 like the last 2.)

Application Cattle = Application related.

Related to social events or community involvement.

Mobile User = Use Weibo on your mobile phone/devices

MSN潮人 = MSN Chao Ren = Link your MSN account to Weibo and you’ll get it. It doesn’t get easier than this.

139说客 = Link your 139说客 account to Weibo and then you’ll get this. Another easy one.

Medal Setting

This setting is allowing you to show or hide the medals that you earned or received. If you want it to show, leave it. If you want to change anything, do it and then click on the button. Done!

FLASH-LINE: (Tuesday, July 5th, 2011): Did anyone know that profile badges have moved to this page http://badge.weibo.com/ instead?

So here goes a quickie on the tabs: The first one is ‘Home’ tab, which is obvious; the second one is showing all the badges that you could get; the third one is showing the badges you earned so far AND a comparison chart to the right with your friends; the last tab is the ‘Help’ tab aka the FAQs. We’re good? I’m lazy to explain, LOL! Some changes here and there really so no one would feel left out since I earned another badge after the new set of badges go into effect.

Last tab! I need to jump! GOSH! This seemed SOOOOO long.

What is this saying? It displays all the application you’re using relating to Weibo. I just dl-ed the messenger like awhile back so it shows that. I can disconnect or severe the connection anytime I want.

V. 退出 = Exit (or Log-out) = Need I say more? When you log out, it takes you back to Weibo’s main homepage.

There! We’re all done with settings now. The next one is so the last one, which is about ‘Posts’.

NOTE: All instructions and images were written and captured respectively by DTLCT

IF you have questions OR are confused in any way, please post a comment.

  1. Hahaha, this is good. Nice to know what the medals means xD
    In regards of my problem… I think that only verified accounts or public figures get a public profile. The rest of accounts require login.
    Will be following on Weibo xD

  2. Thank you very much for that excellent tutorial…I have been forwarding already…
    I can’t find how to delete an account (I have made two….by mistake)….
    fi anyone knows, thnak you in advance for your answer

  3. @twoanyone – Which version of Weibo are you using now? The old version or the newer version from several months back? If you’re still using the older version, follow the steps above under #1. Basic Information to change the part where it said

    If you’re using the newer version, it’s under this tab ” 帐号” – > “帐号设置” -> 联系邮箱 (Contact E-mail). Then you should see the words “修改” next to the e-mail. Click on it to change.
    If that’s what you’re asking for. IF not, please clarify and I’ll try again.

    @petri71 – I can’t find it either but I think some people had tried to contact Sina regarding it. They might add something like that in the future. Who knows? Sorry, couldn’t help.

    @nodame – Sometimes it just won’t work. I had tried that before and it took several times. But it might be a glitch. I don’t know either. Maybe they’ll fix that in the future. Not sure.

  4. hai there… I’m so confused to find how to change my domain… I means from number such as *1234758549 into a name *for example shehasit ?? could I changed it after i already create an account? I means I have a weibo account already… hope u can help me kkk~ thanks ^^~

  5. @nanae – It’s #6 in the tutorial: 6.

    However, are you using the new version of Weibo? That navigation would be different so that might be a problem. If you are, then go here: “帐号” – > “帐号设置” – > “个性域名”. Then you should be able to change your domain from number to whatever nickname you choose.

  6. Can you help me? i signed up for wiebo using android app. they didnt ask me to put in any email at that time so i didnt. but now i want to log in to computer and when i enter my nickname into it, they say the account wasnt registered. i tried signing up with the same name and it says that the name is already used. i used my friend’s account to see my account, everything was there like i already sign up. whats with this issue.. im really so pissed 🙁

    1. Did they give you a code when you register? There has to be at least something to confirm registration. Let me go ask others since I’m not familiar with registration via apps versus the actual computer one.

  7. Hi, would like to ask how can I private my weibo post after it has been sent as ‘public’ ? Is there any way to change it without deleting the post? Thanks for sharing!

    1. Okay, here goes: photo weibo_privacy.png

      There’s an arrow to the top right corner of each post. If you click on it, there’s a mini window popping up at the corner. (Like above image.) The options shown are as follow:
      删除 = Delete
      置顶 = Top (sticky post it to the top aka keep it at the top of the page)
      加标签 = Tagging (aka if you want to add tags to it)
      转换为好友圈可见 = Change it so it’s visible to friends only
      转换为仅自己可见 = Change it so it’s only visible to you

      Just scroll down the options like how you would with typical menus. The one you’ve selected will be highlighted so you will know which one you’re selecting. Once you’re sure, click on it. That should change the privacy for that post. I haven’t been back to Weibo for ages SO not sure for general settings but it should be around somewhere in the ‘Settings’.

    1. Follow the red highlights and numbers I marked: photo prefer_settings.png

      Right-click on picture to ‘view image’ so you could see a bigger version of it.

      The sections are as follow:
      @我的 = Messages directed at you
      评论 = Comments
      赞 = Likes
      私信 = Private Messages
      新粉丝 = New Fans
      好友圈 = Friends Circle

      Basically anything having these words “提醒” = Remind and “不提醒”= Don’t Remind are relating to Notifications, like if you want to be alerted when you have new follows/fans, private messages, etc.

  8. Hi, glad that i found your tutorials. I have a problem with my account. I made account in 2013 and never use itu for a while. Now im starting to use it again, but everytime i log in with computer, it directs me to verification organisations page. I only could open setting page. Whenever i try to open my profile or home page, it will back to the verification page. I might made a mistake when registering my account, but is there any way to fix it? ><
    Thank you so much!

    1. Did you verify your account properly when you opened the account? If yes, I don’t know why it doesn’t let you in. Can you do a screen cap of the error message so I could take a closer look? Thanks!

  9. Hi, thank you so much for your tutorials. I have a problem. I made an account in 2013 and now everytime i log in with computer, it always jump onto verification organisation page. I cant go anywhere except setting page. I cant open my profile or home page because it will direct me to the verification page again. I might made a mistake when registering for the first time. But is there any way to fix my account?
    And how to delete some photos from profile picture album?
    Thank you so much

    1. As for profile pictures deletion, click into your profile picture at the top right corner. It takes you to your profile page. On the album tab (second from top left corner), click “View More”. There’s a box at the top left corner on the page “Photo Wall”, click “Profile Album/Pictures” (头像相册). In there, you should see all your profile pictures. Hover over the picture to see the options below the picture. Whichever picture you want to get rid of, click on “Delete” (删除). A box will pop up to ask: “Are you sure you want to delete this picture?” Left option is “Confirm” (确定), right option is Cancel (取消).

      P.S. if you can’t get to your profile page or any of that sort, probably need to sort out your verification problem before getting into any pages.

  10. Hi i need your help
    I’m trying to change my email but every time i try opening it (clicking edit next to email info) the website redirects me to ‘change password’ page instead
